Question:
When are sleep study results available?
I am scheduled for my sleep study in two days. It is an overnight procedure. I was referred to the sleep study by prescription from my PCP. Will I be given results at the end of the study and be told if I have sleep apnea, or will I have to wait until they are sent to my doctor? How long after your sleep study were you aware of the results? Thank you! — Shayna T. (posted on January 5, 2004)

Where I had my sleep study done, you have an appointment set up with the
sleep doctor the morning following the night of your study when you go over
the study and he/she prescribes a CPAP if needed. The CPAP has made a
major difference for me.

Locally they do them in one night one visit. If they come in and put a mask
on you you know you have apnea. Then they try to find a suitable pressure
setting. Good way to get no sleep:( Although a very important pre op test.
You life literally depends on it.

When I had my sleep study, the results were sent to my doctor. I had to
wait a month for my follow-up with my PCP for the results and when I went,
I had to wait for him to call and get the results because they were so far
behind, they didn't have the official results, but the prelim was enough
for him to know that I had apnea. Then they set up a second study to fit
me with the mask, etc.

I had the initial results right away from the technicians that watch the
monitors and me while I was sleeping. I actually had 2 sleep studies, but
my physician had a criteria already built in that if I reached a certain
level with my disrupted sleeping, then to start choosing which CPAP mask
that would fit my face. Once the right mask was found, then I slept the
rest of the study like a baby and have ever since as well! Good Luck!
