Question:
Sinus Infection 9 Days To Go Is Surgery Still Possible?
I've had allergy issues for the last few months so when my cheek started to hurt on and off a week or so ago I didn't really worry about it. Yesterday and today its gotten worse plus I've had a lot of post nasal drip this whole time. Anyway since it got worse last night I took my temp and discovered I have a low grade fever of 99.5. I don't have the yellow mucus or anything just drainage, facial pain, and this low fever. I'm going to try to see my doctor tomorrow if he can't see me. I am going to try to get in somewhere. I will call my surgeon Monday to see if surgery will be possible. But I was wondering has anyone taken antibitics this close to surgery (7 or 9 days). I'm so upset! — Renee A. Hi Renee, I had my date for sugery Dec 17th and it was cancelled. I too had
a sinus infection-face pain--the whole 9 yards that goes with it, then felt
better. Went for my pre admit paper work and blood work and my white blood
count was high from the infection and they would not operate. Boy was I
upset. Have had 3 more blood tests, last one was this past Tuesday. Dr
said count was coming down. Hoping that I will hear something this Monday
or Tuesday and just maybe get another surgery date. Get your self to a Dr
and just maybe you can keep the surgery date you have. Good luck and I
will keep you in prayer.

I had a sinus infection right about that same time frame before my
surgery...and yes I still had surgery as scheduled. I called my PCP freakin
out about the EXACT same thing! He gave me a Z-pack and Zyrtec-D (my fav
allergy med) and I was good to go before surgery. I'd call your PCP first
to get meds before calling the surgeon. Also, stress to your PCP how
important it is to be well before surgery. If you haven't told your PCP
you're having WLS, just tell them that you are scheduled for surgery and
need to be well ASAP. I was still taking Zyrtec while in the hospital too
(through my G-tube). A lot can change before now and your surgery date,
plenty of time for you to get to feeling better. :-)<p>
Hope that helps! Good luck to you!

I think you should call and get in to your PCP,ASAP so you can get started
on an antibotic, Z-pack is great, and some surgeons use antibotics as a
profilactic, and I think its a good idea any way to ward off infection.
Mine did before my back surgery. In the mean time get plenty of rest and
drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated, and you should be "good to
go" for WLS. Good luck on your journey, and enjoy the ride! :0)

I too like that Zpack stuff. But if I can't get antiboitics then I've had
really good luck with the over the counter TYLONAL COLD AND SINUS. (And
their COLD and FLU is good too). I always go for the NON drowsy.

Thank you everyone for answering my question! I did get in to see the
doctor today. He was only taking walk-ins so I spent an hour and a half in
a room full of coughing, sneezing, sniffling people. I kept a hanky over
my mouth and nose most of the time so I know people thought I lost my mind.
Anyway he didn't give me the z-pack I'm not sure why because I've taken it
before but I also had a reaction to a medicine in that same line so I guess
he wanted to go with another kind just in case. I also stopped all milk
products because they cause a lot of drainage too. My face still hurts a
little but doing much better. I think I caught this so early on before it
became a problem. My doctor calmed me down and said it shouldn't prevent me
from having surgery since I have no problems breathing through my nose.
I'm still worried that something will happen and my surgery date will be
canceled. Of course I think a lot of people go through that. Once again
thanks!

I noticed when I entered the hospital that I seemed on the verge of sinus
congestion. I noted the same to my surgeon. When I awoke from surgery I
found that they had inserted something called 'nasal trumpets' in my
nostrils. These things keep the sinus open and provide a passage no matter
what happens. I freaked because I could not feel air moving through my
nose. Once I understood I was fine, but it was a very strange sensation
having them there. It was also uncomfortable when they were removed about
12 hours post-op. Just make sure people know what's going on and they can
handle it.
