Question:
only the duodenum bypassed?

I recently asked my Dr how much of my intestine was bypassed, he said only the Duodenum(sic), so about 75cc(his words). Well I have been researching and am finding that the Duodenum is anywhere from 10cc to 25cc. Does anyone have more specific information on this. I am really confused and getting put off from the Drs office. If I really have only a 25cc or less bypass, will I still be successful and do I worry about, or have any malabsorbtion at all? Has anyone else had this small amt bypassed? Thanks,    — WendieS (posted on December 3, 2003)

Actually that would be 75 centimeters(cm) not cc(cubic centimeters) For the non-metric ppl.... cm is a length measurement. 2.5 cm = 1 inch./// cc is a volume measurement. ml is the equivalent liquid measurement. 26 cc or 26 ml = 1 ounce. Most medical terminology is based in metric measurements.. cc's, cm's, ml's, meters, liters. FYI.. a meter is approx. a yard and a liter is approx a quart. I'm sure your surgeon bypassed the 75cm not 10 or 25cm. I don't think wls would be worth doing with any less than approx 75cm bypassed. If he said 75 then he meant 75, don't worry :)

I have noted that the usual amount of bypass tends to be approx 75 to 100cm. Obviously the real important part of this is how your body works. For some people the 75cm is plenty, for others the 100cm is best. Your surgeon has experience that may show that he prefers the 75cm distance best. If you don't like that, then s/w another md who does the 100cm. You must have confidence in your surgeon! best wishes, karen (open rny 9/6/01, 297/145)

If you just have to know how much he bypassed, contact the hospital's record department and get the OR report. It will state it in there somewhere. As far as, is 75cm enough, that is an individual thing. You may do great with it, but another might not lose as much. Going by your profile, you've lost 72# in about 4 months (as of Nov.)- that is fantastic, an average of 18# per month.
