Question:
What's it taste like
Okay I know this is an odd question...but can anyone describe what cottage cheese tastes like. I have never in my 34 years tasted it. Yes, I know I could buy some and try it but I have so few things I can "stomach" and I dont want to taste it only to spend the next 1/2 hour ralphing it up. — Michelle B. (posted on November 6, 2003)

I know exactly where you are coming from. I’m 57 and will not
taste cottage cheese, yogurt, sour cream or cream cheese. Sapala-Wood

Michelle, in food like lasagna, it is tolerable. But alone, it is nasty,
cold, lumpy, and spoiled/rotten tasting! I can't stand it and will not eat
it!!! Sorry to be so truthful! P.S. People may suggest adding something
to it such as fruit to get it down....DON'T BELIEVE THEM!!!

Ok... now from another perspective: I LOVE cottage cheese. It is a very
versatile food. There are so many things that you can do with it. Alot of
the protein that I get in during the day comes from cottage cheese. To me
it has a creamy, very mild taste. And if you don't like the lumps... theres
a solution to that too. Just blend it up. If you blend it with some Splenda
and a little lemon juice, it tastes like cheesecake. YUM. I have lots of
recipes that include Cottage Cheese. My husband wouldn't try cottage cheese
because of the lumps... I blended it and sweetened it and he loved it.
Sometimes for breakfast I have cottage cheese with a little Splenda and
cinnamon mixed in. So my advice is... try it a couple different ways and
decide for yourself. If you want any recipes including cottage cheese...
feel free to email me.

Everyone has different tastes. I personally LOVE cottage cheese, and I
think it's delicious!! There are LOTS of things that I think are DISGUSTING
(peas, tomatoes), but I would never tell someone NOT to try them. Cottage
cheese is not expensive. Go buy some and try it!! One small bite shouldn't
cause you to "ralph", lol. You can't go by what others say on
"how" something tastes.

OMG!!! You guys are grown people!!! I am absolutely shocked that you
won't try something at least once. I mean.....isn't that what we tell our
children. For all you know, it could taste like chocolate to you.
Personally cottage cheese is ok to me...not wonderful, but not gross
either. But honestly, since surgery...thats how I feel about most foods.

Preop I loved cottage cheese, but postop I couldn't stomach it until I was
about 6 months out. It went sour in my mouth and stomach. Blech. I'm sooo
happy it tastes good again :>) Gotta have pepper on it though lol

You have got to at least TRY it ONCE!!! I have always tolerated cottage
cheese pre-op on certain diets(of course it was real easy to like in
lasanga!), but now post-op I absolutley LOVE it espeically since I know how
much protein I am getting in by eating it. It doesn't bother my stomach at
all and I have always been lactose intolerant (but could always handle
cheeses) I like to eat it with fruit, but one of the other poster had a
good idea about adding splenda and cinnamon (sounds delicious!) ANYWAY....
to answer your question it sorta tastes like a cold, wet, mild cheese (it
doesn't have a strong flavor at all) sorta a cross between sour cream and
cream cheese. I hope this helps! POST-OP 5/19/03 Open RNY

cottage cheese is a mainstay in my diet. I always take it to work for my
lunch. Breakstone has little single serving packages. I eat it mixed in
with tuna, (ok looks gross, tastes good, better for me than using mayo) i
put sliced tomatos and basil on top, or unsweetened applesauce,
strawberries, etc. It is soft, easy to digest, and if you have to eat in a
hurry as I do at work if I want to eat at all, it doesn't take much
chewing. if I'm to tired to cook a little cottage cheese makes a great
dinner too.

A girl at a group told me a GREAT way to eat cottege cheese. Take some and
sprinkle it with splenda, then add fruit like fresh strawberries, sprinkle
more splenda, and then add a dash of vanilla and mix it up. I then top it
with splenda (I like it sweet, lol). It tastes like a dessert!

Hi there! I can't think of a way to describe cottage cheese, it has a
taste all its own! If you do try it, I recommend the Knudsens in the
yellow and blue container. It has a small curd and isn't soupy. Shamrock
has a bigger curd and I don't care for the texture of the big curd. Be
daring and try it -- yes if you don't like it you may be sick for a while,
but if you DO like it, it's a great wls food, goes down pretty soft, is
good for you, and I love the taste of it! If you like the taste, you can
do so much with it -- salt and/or pepper it, mix in fruit or yogurt, eat
some smoothed onto a piece of celery instead of cream cheese, add raisins
to it, put it on top of a salad, etc. My sister even puts a little pancake
syrup in it -- I think that sounds gross but she loves it! It's very
versatile, give it a try!

I did not eat cottage cheese until I was well into my twenty's. I was on
yet another diet, (Diet Workshop?) and that was a choice. The way I learned
to like it, was to put cinnamon and equal into it. This tasted soooooooo
good! I slowly developed a taste for it plain. However, I absolutely love
it topped with peaches or pineapple. I was not able to eat cottage cheese
until about a year out. Good luck! Shelley

Hi Michelle ... I've been eating cottage cheese since my second week
post-op (small curd -- 1% as opposed to 4% milkfat I think it is). I
actually have loved cottawge cheese since I was a kid! I agree with the
other posters ... a bit difficult to explain the taste (a bit bland
actually ... some lasagna recipes use it instead of ricotta cheese), but I
also like the fruit (banana, pears, peaches, blueberries, strawberries,
etc.), or the splenda/cinnamon touch. I've heard of people putting salt
and/or pepper on it too (haven't tried that though). You can actually buy
a small container in case you don't like it, but there are so many ways to
doctor it up, there's bound to be a way you'll like it. PLUS, it's got 13
grams of protein in 4 oz ... an added bonus! Good luck! LAP RNY 06/18/03

I had it once as a very young child. If I remember right, I thought it
tasted "metalic". I never wanted to try it again. I've pasted up
alot of good jello as I can see cottage cheese a mile away. I love yogart
and sour cream though!

Cottage cheese has a taste that is all its own, so there really is no way
to describe it to you. I do know that I LOVE cottage cheese as does my
young son. I have never tried it sweetened or with fruit, personally I
find that repulsive but that is JMHO. Try it. It's cheap, comes in small
containers and is in facy very good, alone, as well as in recipes. I would
NOT recommend getting large curd if you have never tried it before. I do
not even like that, but the small curd, 1% is very good. Like I said, try
it, what do you have to lose?

I love cottage cheese both pre and post op. My favorite way to eat it is
mixed with a bit of salsa. Gives it a great taste and something different
other than sweet. Can eat it with carrot sticks or ff wheat thins.
I like Breakstones small curd, creamy, mild, delicious!

I'm sorry, but how can one person say what something else tastes like?
Everyone is different. I enjoyed cottage cheese, but always have. I can't
stand any type of yogurt or sour creme though..so what does that mean? I
eat it with either pepper on it, or on a potato chip (baked) or cracker of
some kind. It is a great source of protein and you don't have to eat much
of it to get the benefits. I tend to eat it if I'm in a hurry or at the end
of the day if I'm short on protein.
Think of something you really enjoy that would go well with it and try them
together.
Best wishes!

Michelle, To me(pre-op dairy lover), cottage cheese is...cool, milky,
mildly salty, and wet with a buttery taste. Poor quality has bland
tastelessness and lowfat has less flavor too. If you takeaway the mild
cheesy flavor you're left with a white, wet, mushy, high protein
"soup" that I would think would be very soothing to the pouch.
My favorite brand is Nordica.

If you're still wondering.........Like you, I had never tried cottage
cheese before surgery and was reluctant to try it. At first, I tried the
one with pineapple and thought it was ok. Then I ventured on to the plain
kind (and liked it even better! I eat it everyday.
