Question:
Is it possible to dump on Tylenol #3?
I am 1 month post-op, and was prescribed Tylenol #3 after surgery. I haven't used the Tylenol since I got home just over 2 weeks ago until tonight. I had a migrane and took 2 Tylenol. I never had a problem with it up until now... It's been 2.5 hours since I took them, and for the past 2 hours I've been shakey, sweaty, and having extreme pain in my upper abdomen which is going straight through to my back. Is this dumping or am I having a bad reaction? — Shoshana K. (posted on November 3, 2003)

I had the exact thing happen the first and LAST time i took tylenol 3. The
pain radiating around to my back was unbearable. i was doubled over just
wimpering like a puppy. It was awful. It took about 2 hours for it to
pass. by the time i got to the hospital it had passed so i went back home
and fell asleep. it wore my out. I would recommend you call your doc and
have him prescribe something else for whatever pain you are trying to
overcome. I know i wont be taking that stuff again and no thats quite dift
from dumping. Good luck and i hope this answer finds you all better!

I had a horrible experience after taking Tylenol 3 for the first time. I
thought I was dying. My surgeon suggested taking only half the pill when
needed and I've found that to work just fine.

Tylenol #3 contains codeine which can be VERY hard on the stomach.
Whatever you do, don't take it on an empty stomach. You might even want to
consider taking something else for the time being.

I take t#3 for my migrains (pregnant now), and I HAVE to take it on a full
stomach or it just flat KILLS me. I have found that taking it on a full
stomach with a little bit of oj or eating an orange really seems to keep
the irritation from happening. And that is what it is... your
stomach/lining of your intestines is being irritated by the codiene. Good
Luck! (Taking it with milk alone just doesn't work, either!! You have to
eat!)
