Question:
Have anyone ever ask for a later surgery date

I know must people will jump on the first available surgery date but I might have to ask for a later date. My transition is going so smoothly I think I might get a surgery date for December. This sounds wonderful, but it poses a problem. I'm very close to my mom and want her here to be my support person but she told me she can't come until after the holidays. If i get a date for December do you think I will have to wait a long time for another one?    — shae7755 (posted on November 2, 2003)

Shun, I think that there should be no problem making your date *later* than what they give you initially. It's when they give you a December surgery date and you want one in November that it the problem. <p> The only thing I would wonder about is if the surgeon might be on vacation during that time...JR

Congratulations on your approval!! The only thing I would say about waiting is this...... Depending on your insurance....at the beginning of the year sometimes your benefits can change. That is usually the time when your employer will make any changes for the year. I would try to have it this calander year so you dont have any chance of your benefits changing. If its possible, maybe you can check with your HR dept to make sure WLS wont be excluded. Anyways, good luck whenever you have your surgery!!

When my surgeons office called to give me a date I had to ask for it to be put off a month. I did not want to spoil my families summer vacation. The office said No Problem, though the girl said she had never had anyone ask for it to be put off a month. LOL I ended up going in 2 days after we got back. It worked out great, I had no time to think about surgery and never got nervous till that morning on the 2 hour drive there. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

Hi Shun, I had a double surgery date problem. The first, I had to have surgery before Jan 1 because BCBS won't cover WLS after that with our policies. Second, I had to wait until after Thanksgiving because of my work. The doctor's office thought I was nuts but they were very willing to give me a later date. Hence, I have a surgery date of December 1. Just ask the doctor's office and check with your insurance before you make any definate plans. May God Bless YOU!! Jill

I did, I thought it would take forever to get the date I wanted so I had my consultation in October 2002. I was approved for surgery and the scheduling department wanted to give me a December date. Since I am a teacher, I wanted a June date. So I waited. BTC only schedules about a month or two in a dvance, so I was told to call back in May. I called in early April and was told that BTC would no longer accept my insurance after June 1st. So I had to hurry up and get in in May. I ended up taking 3 weeks off work to the end of the school year and had all summer to recover.

When I got my approval it was only good for 90 days, so make sure that isn't a factor as well or you will have to start all over!

Hi Shaun, My surgeon's feeling is that the patient should choose the date that works out best for them - and then you see if that date works out for him, too. If not, he's willing to phenagle a bit, but I think most offices are willing to work with people. Only way to find out is to ask! Blessings, dina

I chose a later surgery date when one came up for me. The date they wanted to schedule me for was in the third week of september. My husband wanted to be with me when i went out of town for my surgery and because his job is the busiest at the end of the months, he wouldnt have been able to go. So I asked if they could make it the first part of October. They had no problem with it whatsoever. The sept appointment was the earliest they had, so by me delaying it a couple of weeks, worked out better for me and allowed someone else to take my first date.

I too asked for a later date, when I called to set my date in early October, they were scheduling for early November, but due to my parents being out of town around that time (mom's going to help me with recovery) I decided to tell them I didn't want a date until Dec. When I told them this, they said dec was wide open and I could pretty much chose any date. It worked out great... It probably won't be a problem at all.

I also asked for a later surgery date. I could have had my surgery Nov. 3rd (today) but my husband is deployed for several more weeks so i asked to have my surgery postponed for a few weeks so my husband could be there for our son. It was no problem to move my date. It would have been great to take the earlier surgery date but things happen for a reason and I am just fine waiting.

I also had to ask for a later surgery date due to scheduling time off from both mine and my husband's jobs... For me and for my surgeon, asking for a LATER date made the whole process actually EASIER!! Best wishes & God bless!!

Shun, If it works better for you, make a later date. My nutritionist has suggested we all need some time to prepare mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually anyway. Don't worry about the wait - it actually seems to go by pretty fast. Just make the most of your wait by walking, eating better food, multivitamins, cleaning house, praying and whatever else you can think of that might need to be done beforehand.

You can always say..."Do you have anything around such and such date" they'll tell you the next available date and you can either take it or the december date. I'm sure with the holidays and all...they'd understand you asking for a later date.
