Question:
For the Ladies ...What kind of

Ladies, I need your help. I haven't had to worry about my menstral cycle for years. However I have read that many have their period return right after surgery. I'm 51 so my doctor is convinced I won't have to worry about my cycle restarting with drastic weight loss, but I don't want to take any chances and want to be prepared just in case. What brand "pads" do you use? I'm large and want to be sure I get one that will give me enough protection in length and width. I was kind of embarrassed to ask, but just knew that many of you would have the answer for me. Thank you in advance.    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on October 22, 2003)

Hello, I use Always. They have a plus sized pad. It's not super thick but works well. Hope this helps.

since i had hysterectomy in '99 ; i haven't had to worry-however- good question! ya feel silly in the store opening the packs! pre-hyst. i used kotex maxi overnites cuz i would tend to flow heavy ( sorry guys- it said for the ladies!!!)and they are somewhat long-i haven't bought any since '99 so maybe there are other suggestions from other gals? if you buy and do not use-give them to a food pantry or to a nursing mom to cut in half for nursing pads! good luck to you- i am of similar age - email if you wish!

I have seen Kotex advertise a plus size pad...that is what I am going to look for when I get my stuff together for the hospital ... just in case Aunt Flo is MO (heavy)LOL!...normally I use the Poise Pads as they aren't too thick and they have various sizes to meet your needs. Also, for those who have had their plumbing removed, I have read on here that many use pads to cover their incisions during the recovery phase to protect and pad those areas. Hope this helps! Best of luck!!!

I had my surgery Feb 20th 2003. I'm 53 and hadn't had a period in nearly a year and 2 months ago had one. I haven't had one this month so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it won't happen anymore. Boy was I disappointed when it happened! I use the plus size also. -93lbs and enjoying life!

Mary, My favorite is Stayfree Overnight w/wings. They are nice and long for excellent day and night coverage & protection, yet very thin for discretion & comfort. They have a nice cottony dry cover, too, instead of that new synthetic-like cover. (They come in a blue bag of 32 with a purple stripe that says "ultra thin overnight w/wings"--the UPC code is 8004-103600.)

Always has a pad for plus size women. It can also be used by small people if they have a very heavy flow. The Poise pads are for bladder incontinence. Who know? You probably won't even have to worry about it! Good luck

Hey Mary...I've used ALWAYS with wings for years.....either the super or overnight. They really aren't bulky at all. I have yet to see or buy the plus size Always pad they advertised on TV.

Oh lord do I hate any pad with wings! They always flip over no matter how well I adhere them and grab hair (sorry to be indelicate - but it HURTS!). I much prefer Kotex Ultra Thin long (or super I think they're calling it now). It's longer than a traditional pad and wide enough for me. In fact now at 14 months I've stopped using the long and use the regular. It's not such a long distance from front to back lol

boy, I envy you guys. I myself COULD NOT survive without a tampon (usually light to normal absorbancy because of Toxic Shock Syndrom) and an Always pad (the overnight ones are the BEST). I hafta use both because the pad by itself always slips (even with the adhesive and wings - the wings just get bunched). Good luck! -Erinn

Always Overnight longs with wings --they are best for large ladies

I use combination OB Super Tampons and Always Overnights with Wings. Never have any problems. My periods are pretty light and span anywhere from 28 to 40 days, which stinks but that's life.

Hey lady, I use any pad with wings, For a comfy you should try just a sugestion, wearing your pad and two * 2 * pair of panties for a more snug fit!!! It take a while to get used to ...but trust me that the only way to wear a pad that will stay close to you , with very mininum leakage!!! * Ruschell *

Luckily I had a hysterectomy so I don't have to worry about it either, and I agree you probably won't need to worry about it. The hospital will provide you with pads if you do wind up getting a period. ---- There is a great product called "Instead" which is pretty similar to using a diaphram (contraception) except it catches the menstrual blood and you just take it out and toss it - no leaking, no mess. I loved it! They have them by the pads in many stores, though not all.

You can use Always plus (for sizes 14 and above) or you can use always longs overnight (depending on how heavy you bleed).

I have to agree with Ruth Lamb. Kotex Ultra Thin Longs are the best !!!! I've used them for a couple of years now, and won't use anything else. I also HATE wings, they literally make my panties get in a bunch. LOL Good Luck.

I was told that when females have surgery if they still get their periods you can almost be certain you will get your period during the surgerg and I did. I was so glad I packed pads with me. The best is: ALWAYS MAXI OVERNIGHTS WITH FLEXI-WINGS. They are nice and big and cover front to back. The wings protect your underwear. Bring cotton underwear. I had to cut the front of them to make room for the drainage tube and bandage. I tossed them once I was out of the hospital. Also buy some COTTONELLE WIPES and bring them to the hospital. Remember you are not going to be able to wipe your bottom for a few days. I g They will keep you fresh. I also recommend when you get home a raised toilet seat. It helps relieve the pressure off your stomach muscles when you get up from the toilet. For your bed have lots of pillows. I'm 6 months post op and have lost 118 lbs. When I turned 45 in Sept. I rode a bike (10 miles) for the first time in 20 years. I loved it so much I did it again the next day. I have gotten rid of 6 bags of clothing I can no longer fit into. I had to buy a interview suit and could not believe the size I now fit into (jacket size 14, blouse size 14, pants size 16). This from a girl who wore a size 5x. Again, I wish you the very best.

I use stayfree over night protection. They have some Earth friendly absorbent fibers and they are pretty long and wide. I haven't had any problems yet. Have you considered using Tampons too?

Ya know, I tried tampons right after surgery (once I got home) and had a really tough time with the reaching...it was pretty painful in the immediate interim.

I have always sworn by the stayfree overnight longs with wings, they are longer than the always overnight longs, and I have never had a problem with leakage or anything. :-) good luck! and God bless!

I am super obese and I have really heavy periods. After many trials and tribulations I have found the perfect thing for me. Again - for me - everyone's anatomy is different. I have a problem with bunching towards the bottom of the pad and this leads to leaking. A friend of mine suggested I use two pads and I laughed at her. Out of desparation however, I tried it the cycle. What do ya know? It's PERFECT! I have only gotten this to work with Always Ultra Thin with Wings Overnights or Super. It's absolutly amazing how the first pad magically keeps the one on top from bunching. NO MORE LEAKS!! You put the first pad slightly more forward than you normally might and then the second pad slightly more back. I have had problems my entire life with heavy periods and leaking. I can't take birth control pills so I've been told to just deal with it. It is sad to be in your 30's before you finally find a solution to something that has been happening to you every month since you were 9! hahaha

Always brand - overnights - the ones in the royal blue pkg with the small orange spot (saying they are the overnighters). They are very nice with a good length and width and have the sticky tabs on both the bottom and sides. I bought them by accident and really liked them.

I've been using Always ultra thin overnights with wings..I swear by these. My periods never got weired from my weight because of the birth control I take, but they have always been heavy, and after a long time or trial and error, these are by far the best!
