Question:
Do you drink alcoholic beverages after surgery?
I was NEVER a drinker, however, here lately, I just LOVE White Russian drinks! They taste soooo good. I dont indulge in them except when we go out (once or twice a month). Then I only have two or three drinks. Do you think this will hurt me or cause me to gain weight? Honestly, I was NEVER a drinker, but I could drink one of these every nite (but I don't). Has anyone else experienced this? — Kay W. (posted on October 16, 2003)

I used to love White Russians, but I won't drink them as a post op, because
they are just too strong! I had my FAVORITE imported beer from Belgium the
other night and did just fine. I drank it slowly (due to the fact it is $12
a bottle, lol). It is not as carbonated as a regular beer and it is very
smooth. I saw anything in moderation is okay. Good luck! Sarah, -134 lbs.

I drink occassionally if my Husband and I are out. However, the only thing
I can tolerate is wine. I have tried margaritas and dumped so bad I
thought I was going to die and beer is too carbonated and too many
calories. I do just fine with a glass or two of wine.

I can drink most wines.... desert or sweet wines cause me to dump. And, an
occassional beer sure does taste good. As another poster said....anything
in moderation! ( Preop, White Russian was "my" drink... I thought
it might be too sweet..perhaps I will give that a try!)

In all honesty, before surgery I drank wine or beer just about everyday at
the end of my day... and now post op I noticed i can have wine at the end
of the day again but i definitely have to take in mind the calorie
content....before i have my drink i think about how many calories i have
had that day and that will determine how much wine i may or may not
have....so far i am loosing and I know that if i remain attentive to what i
am taking in i will be successful ...pre-op I never would have counted what
I drank as calories...but NOW I pay attention and it makes the
difference.....

Actually, I have had shots of tequilla after surgery ( saves on all the
calories from the mixers)... not that I am advocating it at all but they
seem to do fine with me. Beer is hard to go down and I avoid it due to the
carbonation ... sweet drinks make me feel funny but tequilla is still
GREAT! Of course, I maybe the one posting one day about an ulcer from it
so I do NOT recommend it... just letting you know it has not bothered me!
But, now that I think about it, I have always had a hard stomach for
liquor... it really never has bothered me and I was never one to throw up
my liquor.

I didn't drink much prior to surgery.. just some beer or wine very
occasionally and nothing regularly. Since surgery, I just love really good
beer. So, I have one now and then, never drink more than half the bottle
and I'm really careful where I have it. Alcohol can really throw you, so
you should be careful. Some things just seem to taste so much better after
surgery. *grin*

I am a social drinker and I drink diet pop with vodka. I stick to what I
know and don't mess around with sweet drinks or beer. I have not had any
problems, but I do get buzzed really quick. I'm defintaley a cheap date
when it comes to Dinner and Drinks lol. Be careful and enjoy :o)

Thought I'd put in my 2 cents. I am 7 months out and I have tried frozen
margaritas and a screwdriver. Not in the same night, but on separate
occasions. With the vodka, I got buzzed really quickly and really didn't
drink that much, but didn't dump. With the margarita, it was slower, but
still very easy to get a buzz, and still no dumping.
I would say that it is like everything else, you will have to try for
yourself. I didn't try anything until I was 6 months out and I kinda know
my limits. I agree with the others...moderation is the key.

My doc says that alcohol has five times the effect on the liver as pre-op.
So, if you're drinking 2 or 3 drinks, that's like 10 or 15 to your body. I
try to keep that in mind when I have a glass of wine, and try to keep it to
a minimum. I've noticed that no matter how little I drink, it gives me a
headache the next day, so pretty much avoid it now.

Baja Bob's makes a line of Splenda-sweetened drink mixers.....strawberry
daquiri, sweet-n-sour, pina colada and margarita. They are great! I've
bought them at either Low Carb Outfitters or Low Carb Connoiseur on the
internet. Also have found them locally at Vitamin World Outlet. Add a
shot of alcohol and a few fresh berries or pineapple and ice and yummy-yum!

Well I had my first post-surgery experience with alcohol this week (at 6
months out). I was in a casino in Vegas and decided to have a beer. I drank
one Corona and had a good buzz going! About two hours later I was sick as a
dog. It wasn't like a hangover, but I kept puking up a sour liquid. My
stomach ached like I had the flu. I won't be drinking anything again for a
long while!

Pre op I could easily drink more than a bottle of wine a day, if I felt
like it. I'm not an alcoholic, but I blame being a Euopean and trying to
keep up with the boys when I was a policewoman in England. Drinking is
definatly more acceptable over there.
Since surgery, I average about 2 glasses of wine. I think this is because I
have retrained myself to slowly sip everything I drink, rather than
"guzzle".
I was kinda looking forward to getting tipsy for the first time in years,
but it hasn't happened yet. I agree with everything in moderation, and
compared to how much I used to drink, I'm being very moderate. No
unpleasant experience.
I drink a beer now and again, mainly because it's not sweet and I love the
carbonation. I can only do about a half bottle tho. I didn't give up my
carbonated drinks either, especially sparkling water. I just drink less of
them and sip small amounts less often. And I used to be a secret, middle of
the night, sneak to the fridge, glug, glug, glug diet soda drinker. LOL. I
think the secret is SMALL sips and slow it down.

I don't think a couple times a month will hurt. Alcohol does have 7
calories per gram, though, and is 100% absorbed. I thought your comment was
interesting. I never drank much either and find I now enjoy the taste much
more (margaritas are my fave). I also am very into cafe lattes too; I'd
drink them all day if I weren't afraid I'd fly right off the planet! LOL I
wonder why that is? Actually most food tastes better too (or lots worse).
Maybe it's because I actually take the time to taste it now instead of
shoveling it in. Or maybe it's just that everything in life is more fun now
and I savor it all with great joy! Chris DS 6/11/02
