Question:
Has anyone ever been operated on while they had a chronic sinus infection?
I was just diagnosed with a severely deviated septum and chronic sinus infection on Friday. My open rny date is on 10.20. My primary care said there is a chance they won't operate while I have this Chronic Sinusitis. Has anyone else had the surgery while having this condition? I am going to a specialist this week but am curious. Thank you! Maria — Maria M. (posted on October 5, 2003)

Maria, first rest assured that you have plenty of time before your surgery
date to get over your sinus infection. I had a severe sinus infection TWO
WEEKS before surgery and was freaking out. I was into my docs office the
day I knew I had the sinus infection after pratically yelling at the nurse
that I was having surgery the following week and absolutely MUST get meds
ASAP to keep my surgery date. I was given a 2 Z-packs and Zyrtec and was
feeling fine by surgery day. I finished the last of the Z-pack like 2 days
before surgery. Heck, I was still taking my Zyrtec through my G-tube while
in the hospital. Good luck with you!! Big hugs, Sharon

Think a minute about what you are asking. You have a sinus infection.
Infection. Infection!
You surely do not want to have any surgery when you have any kind of
infection. Especially a sinus infection, which caused post-nasal drip.
That is the sinus drainage (with all kinds of bacteria in it) dripping down
your throat. When you are intubated for surgery, the tube goes down your
throat, into your lungs. Now do you want that tube to pass thru all that
bacteria and then down into your lungs?
I don't think so. You would be asking for a pneumonia to happen.
Be glad your surgeon is so careful and attentive to your health needs.
If the infection is resistent, ask the doctor to put you on the antibiotic
for 4 weeks, instead of 10 days. it really makes a difference. Be sure to
take all of the anitbiotic.
Good luck,
Cathy

Thank you both for your answers. I met with a specialist today, the
infection as not as bad as my PCP thought and I am getting a liquid
treatment for it. Thanks! Maria
