Question:
If I change my PCP before surgery, can my surgeon refuse to do surgery?
My pcp has referred me to a surgeon. I have had my consult and was approved for surgery on Nov. 6th. Due to another health issue not being taken care of in a timely manner, I am worried that my pcp will not give me the after care that I need should I have any complications after WLS. Do I need final clearance from her before surgery because I would like to find someone that could recognize something that she may miss? I know I need to change but will I have to start over even though I have already been approved? — Barbara D. (posted on September 25, 2003)

No, your surgeon won't care who is doing your regular care, as long as
someone is, and as long as they aren't related or something :)

I changed PCP after I had my consulation with my surgeon. Old PCP started
the process and the new one continued. Everything went O.K. As a matter of
fact switching PCP turned out to be the best thing I did. My current one
is great and supportive. If you feel uncomfortable with your current PCP
you should switch. I think if your surgery has been approved it shouldn't
matter what PCP you have as long as all the necessary exams are done on
time and you get the proper aftercare.

IF YOU HAVE HMO INS..
YOU MIGHT WANT TO CALL YOU INS, BECAUSE IF YOU CHANGE YOU PCP YOUR
IPA/MEDICAL GRP MIGHT CHANGE AS WELL AND ALL AUTH ARE VOIDED.
BUT YOU CAN STILL CHANGE PCP WITH SAME MEDICAL GROUP/IPA AND AUTHS ARE NOT
AFFECTED

It shouldn't matter, but why not call your surgeon and double check with
his office and see to be certain.
