Question:
Atkins Chocolate Peanut butter bar? Did this make me dump?
I havent had any dumping since surgery on 7.11.2003 but today I are a little more than half of the Atkins protein bar and within 10 minutes had to rush to the bathroom with cold sweats, I also felt exhausted suddenly. The bar has 1 g of sugar, 12 g fat and 2 net carbs. Was this dumping and if so why would this cause it? — WendieS (posted on September 16, 2003)

I know that one time I ate the whole bar (or most of it) and was sick most
of the night. SOmebody told me it could be from the maltitol(sp) in it. It
is an artificial sugar that can make people sick. Just a thought 6/27/03

Hi, Wendie: I experienced the same thing about 4 days after surgery after
I drank an Atkins shake. I admit it was good, but I told my surgeon about
it at my post-op appointment, and she told me she thinks that Atkins
products have alot of "hidden" sugars in them, and that could be
the reason we dumped. I tried the EAS Advantedge shakes, didn't care for
them, but they were one she recommended. She also recommended the Isopure
Zero Carb protein drinks or shake mix, and I've had both and find them much
more tolerable. You might want to give the EAS AdvantEdge bars a try, if
you haven't already. I tried them pre-op and thought they were ok. I
really want to try the chocolate chip cookie dough kind, but I haven't been
able to find it yet. I'm only 4 weeks out and not supposed to do the bars
yet; still on this darned full-liquid phase. Oh well, just 2 more weeks to
go! : ) Proximal Lap RNY 08/19/03

I tried the same bar last week and had a similar experience.

Sounds like dumping and it was probably caused from the fat content.

If the item does in fact contain malitol, that is probably the primary
reason for the intestinal 'queasies', as it does the same to anyone not
used to using the substitute alcohol sweeteners. They are listed as having
a 'possible' laxative effect, and they do, if you have not worked your way
up to them in very small doses. Sugar does that to me now, and even after
all these years of type 2 diabetes, I really have to watch for malitol
content.

I totally dump on sugar alcohols otherwise known as maltitol. I had the
same experience with another protein bar.

Everyone is different but here's my $.02 and YMMV: Looking at the
ingredients on the bar (BTW, I love these bars)and there are a few possible
culprits: the high fat content, the Splenda, or the maltodextrin. For me, I
think I tend to dump more from fattier foods. It sounds like you definitely
had a dumping experience-- have you tried other bars with maybe a lower fat
content? There's only 1 gram of sugar in these things and the other carbs
(fiber and glycerin) are the type that tend to enter the intestine than
pure sugar, so it may very well have been the fat.

Sorry for the typo: I meant to say that fiber and glycerin are both carbs
that usually enter the intestine (and thus the blood stream) slower than
pure sugar-- that's why I think it was the fat content that affected you.

Chances are it's the maltitol in the bar. It's hydrogenated corn AKA sugar
alcohol, which give the dumping effect. Basically...it's the equivalent of
eating many cans of corn.

Well, everyone sure is different with different reactions to different
foods. I use the Atkins bars on occassion. I have no problem with them.
However, I can only eat about a third of a bar at a time. Takes me three
days to consume one bar. But you definitely sound like you dumped. I
wouldn't advise eating this stuff really early post op. Just my opinion,
'cuz everyone is different with different reactions to different foods.

I would say also it was Malitol. I dump on malitol the same way I dump on
sugars. What I mean is I dump one way for fat, and a nother way for sugar.
With fat I just feel nauseated and sometime sick to my stomach, But with
sugar I also have hot flashes, sweats, extreme fatigue, and sometimes a
headache. This is how I know what did it to me.

I also think it was the sugar alcohol. I don't have problems with the
Atkins bars (they are one of the few I can tolerate). BUT I have dumped on
a CarbSolutions Peanut Butter & Jelly flavored bar. And NSA ice
cream--really, really bad. Like lying on the floor moaning and wishing
somebody would put me out of my misery dumping. I guess a lot of postop
eating is trial and error. It is amazing to me that I can dump on a low
carb protein bar but eat a package of peanut m&m's without any trouble.
(Not that I do that all the time! :) And here's another twist: Some things
that didn't make me dump at first I seem to develop an intolerance for. I
used to eat Zone Perfect bars from time to time. Now even a half bar makes
me dump.

I don't know about the Atkin's bars (don't care for any of them) but I had
a moderate dumping sensation after eating a Keto cookie! (Like a biscotti
with a few chocolate chips). No problems with a few M&Ms or a couple of
Hershey's kisses. I guess my body prefers the real thing!LOL!
