Question:
What fruit would you suggest?
I am almost 13 weeks post-op and have not had any fruit or fruit juice because I am deathly afraid of dumping. I have had really no problems with just about anything I've tried to eat so far and eat a wide variety. But lately I have been craving fruity/sweet things. I would love to try some fruit but want to keep the sugar content low. What would you suggest for a "beginning" fruit eater that would be low enough in sugar not to make me dump??? — MomBear2Cubs (posted on August 18, 2003)

I am past that point... about 16months post op... I can eat ANYTHING...and
any fruit.. if you haven't had any trouble with anything.. just try it.
Try different ones. Good luck to you!

I am also way past you. I am 6 months post-op and haven't had any dumping
with the fruit that I have been eating so far. But at about 13 weeks post
op I was in your same situation. I tried a mango first...no dumping, a
soft ripe peach( you might want to peel it first ) and felt fine. My only
problem now is that I can NOT stay away from watermelon! yummmmm =)~

Hey there. I had my surgery on May 20th 2003 and ive been eating fruit for
a few weeks now! no dumping, just taking small bites and chewing -- I can
actually eat more fruit then I can anything else, in one sitting.
Watermelon is especially good cause its...well got alot of water in it. :-)
I also eat pears, necterines, grapes and strawberries. As long as it's
soft. Fruit is my snack food. It's what I have when I wanna go crazy! Weird
isn't it? :-)

I LOVE watermellon. It is 99 9/10 WATER! I am not a dumper. But my tummy
sure lets me know when it's full. And I listen! Start off slowly. We are
all so different in our tolerances. I'm glad I am not a dumper. I just
want to be a teeny, tiny eater. But I want to eat EVERY thing. Open RNY
10/30/02 down 187 lbs. Woohoo!

Try canteloupe before you try watermelon. Watermelon is a high glycemic
food and is high in fruit sugars. I had trouble early-on with it, but can
eat it just fine now at 1 year post-op. Canteloupe is lower in fruit
sugars, but just as filling.

I was told Cantalope, watermelon and strawberries were best.

Other than the cantaloupe mentioned below (and watermelon), I'd suggest
berries (blueberries are VERY low sugar). All low-carb and full of
vitamins!

I agree with others that fruits like melons (cantaloupe and such, but be
very careful of watermelon--though it's mostly water, it has a lot of sugar
in it, too) and berries (strawberries and blueberries, especially) are good
places to start. But be careful of grapes and citrus fruits because the
skins and membranes can clog your stoma. Fruits with tough skins (apples,
pears, peaches, plums) should be peeled before you eat them this early.
Also be wary of seeds such as are on raspberries--again they can collect
and create a problem for your stoma. You can eat them, just not too many
at a sitting. Fruit is good for you, and a healthy way to satisfy those
sweet cravings, so start simple, and get more adventerous as you discover
what you can tolerate.

I am 2 years post-op and live off of canteloupe in the summer. I hated it
before surgery, but now it is one of my favorite things to eat. For about
3-4 months after surgery, I craved fruit and really wanted some watermelon.
This may sound gross to many people, but I would chew it up until there
was just the stringy pulp left and spit that part out. As an early
post-op, watermelon never gave me any problems and believe me, I am one who
is prone to dump. My best advice for you is to take it easy. When you are
having sugar cravings, fruit is by far one of the best choices that you can
make. Just try eating a little at first to test your limits. Hope that
helps!

Don't forget bananas!!! (although I can only eat about 1/4 of one) ... that
was the first fresh fruit I was told I could eat (then melon).

I have had no problem with fruit whatsoever. I have dumped on some fruit
juices but raw fresh fruit has been great. It's like dessert for me and oh
so satisfying. I have eaten bananas, pineapple, cantaloupe, blueberries,
cherries, grapes (red and white), plums, and nectarines. I think that's
it. But I've eaten skins on with all of these, except the obvious banana,
pineapple, cantaloupe. I just make sure I chew the skins as well as the
fruit itself. Good fiber! I did have a problem with apple when trying to
eat it by itself. It got stuck and it came up, two different times.
Ironically, however, I can chop it up really small and put it in dishes
(chicken salad) and not have any problem with it at all, even with the skin
on it. It's a crazy thing, this new body of mine, but I love it. I can't
imagine living without fruit, I hope you find something that you can enjoy!
Good luck!
