Question:
If FIVE FEET is bypassed is that Proximal or Distal?
My surgeon says he bypassed 5 feet of my intestines. I've never heard of it referred to it that way before from all the postings here. I always read about proximal or distal and even how many cm was bypassed. Anybody know what a bypass of 5 feet is? — Vicki S. (posted on August 2, 2003)

It is neither, it is somewhere in between, and it is called " a long
Roux limb".

My surgeon would call that a distal and it is 152.4 cm.

My doctor does 150 cm (aprox 5 feet) and he jokingly calls it a
"medial". He said he found that it works well. Not too much,
not too little, just right!

My surgeon says 150 or less is proximal, 151 and over is distal, so Ruth is
right - of course!
