Question:
Anyone developed a rash on arms post-op?
Could a rash on the top of my forearms be surgery (or post-op diet) related? I am 10 weeks out from open RNY and have develped an itchy, red, ugly rash on my arms. (I'm using Benadryl and/or Cortizone 10 to control the itching, but want to know the cause.) Could this be caused by a vitamin deficiency, dehydration, or something of the like related to our post-op diet? I'm wondering if I should contact my RNY surgeon or just go directly to a dermatologist for this? — Kimberly B. (posted on July 25, 2003)

Any chance you are using any new brand of laundry detergent, perfume, body
lotion? It could be an allergic reaction to something like that too. Hope
you feel better soon.

Original poster here... I forgot to mention that I haven't changed any of
the products that I use. That was the first thing that went through my mind
too. Also, I first noticed the rash a little over a week ago and it has
just been getting progressively worse.

I am 6 months out now and have my rash and itching under control with a
Zyrtec in the morning. I started out with itchy rash on my arms, neck,
shoulders and chest and with some on my legs around about 10 to 12 weeks
out. I had tests up the whazoo to no avail. The Allergist thinks it is
something internal going on since the surgery, but can't really put a
finger on the cause. My surgeon has no idea. Thankfully a course of
Zyrtec and Allegra for several days and now the Zyrtec in the morning
eliminated the rash, but the itching is still there especially on my arms a
good deal of the time. Hopefully this will improve for both of us with
time. Good Luck!
