Question:
I am a month out today and have had no problems up to now.

I went to the gym for the first time yesterday and worked out hard. This morning I got up and my stomach hurt a little but after I drank about 4 oz, I started to feel sick. I took a couple bits of cheese thinking that maybe if I had something solid, I would feel better. Within an hour I was throwing up every 10 min. or so and constantly had nuasea. I did not throw up the cheese or my drink so I guess it went through the stoma with no problem. I have never been so sick in my life and threw up tons of bile (YUCK). My husband called the surgeon, who was away so another sugeon in his practice. (not gastric bypass) called me back and prescribed a anti-nuasea med. I took this in pill form and within a half an hour (now) I feel better. I am starting to sip liquids. Has this ever happened to anyone? I had no sugar this morning or anything new? I am worried that I could have an intestinal blockage or something??    — Heather S. (posted on June 22, 2003)

Did your surgeon clear you to exercise? It was at least 6 weeks before my surgeon cleared me for any exercise more strenuous than walking...JR

Yes, I got a full clearance to go to the gym or do any other excersize at 2 weeks out. I have been walking almost daily but this was the first time at the gym. Th other thing I forgot is that I threw up for almost 6 hrs before calling the Dr.

My bariatric program states not to lift anything over 10 lbs. for the first 6 weeks...and lifting also includes pushing/pulling over 10 lbs. You should definitely wait at least the 6 weeks (for healing internally) before you work out so strenuously, and certainly follow up with your own surgeon as to why you got so nauseous and sick.

I did not throw up until the second month out then I was sick every time I tried to eat or drink anything until about the fourth month. I do not throw up now unless I eat too much or too fast.

I would suggest that you continue to sip liquids tonight and see how that does and call your surgeon tomorrow. It could be that you have a tummy virus. We tend to think that everytime we get sick, it's surgery related but we are still suceptible to the same viral infections as before surgery. I recently had a terrible one - couldn't eat solid food for days. My surgeon had me eat popsicles (with sugar) and wanted me to drink Gator Ade or Coke (with sugar) but I wouldn't. I can't stand Gator Ade and I was addicted to Cokes so I didn't want to go there. We finally settled on the popsicles, jello and peppermint candies. I only did that til the nausea subsided and then I went back to the full liquids for several days then added in soft foods. By the way, I was 18 months out when this happened so I was pretty sure it had nothing to do with the surgery. I am fortunate that my WLS surgeon will treat me for almost anything like that - he knows so much more about meds that we can handle than my PCP. Hope you feel better soon.

Heather my husband had his RNY May 8th, 2003 and he had lots of problems with drinking and eating at first. The Dr. put him on Prevacid and Regalan. One for naseau and the other for acid. It helped him a lot. He also eats a few crackers to settle his stomach. Hang in there maybe a virus like one of the members said. Hugs, Rhonda
