Question:
Anyone choose between the Fobi pouch and RNY?
I'm looking to talk to anyone that understands the differences between the RNY and the Fobi pouch (Transected Vertical Gastric Bypass with a Silastic Ring Band and a gastrostomy with a gastrostomy site marker, popularly known as the "Fobi-Pouch Operation for Obesity"). Which in your oppinion is better and why. All this medical mumbo is too much for me to understand. I'm thinking of changing surgeons to have a tummytuck done with my surgery but the doctor I found only does the Fobi Pouch. Please help!!! — Trin2rilax Cheryl McCoy (posted on June 20, 2003)

The fobi pouch is transected (cut away from the main stomache) and not
suppose to stretch as much as the a regular RNY since it is vertical (I'm
assuming that being vertical doesn't let food sit too long or sit in a way
that allows the pouch to stretch much?). Also the FP has the Silastic Ring
Band around to reinforce the stoma (connection site for the small intestine
and pouch) which reduces the possibility of developing a stricture and
having the stoma close up too small. The site marker is suppose to help
them check on the status of the stoma/pouch more easily (assuming that it
shows up on x-rays or something?).
<P> I was told I had a 1 oz fobi pouch but also was told that my
pouch is not transected. They opted for nontransection because it is more
easily reversed. So after researching what the FP is ... I'm not sure what
I have. On Monday, I'm requesting a copy of my medical records concerning
the surgery and find out what exactly they did.
