Question:
Help?! Protein making me sick.
Let me be more specific. I cant seem to eat enough natural protein (meat, cheese) I just cant get it in. I was adding to my protein intake with supplements and shakes but now they're all starting to make me feel sick. Even if I can manage to gag it down, my belly starts to hurt. Milk based are completly out - that really makes me sick. The others just make me feel like I have a rock in my stomach. I haven't tried the nectar or isopure (can't find them here) but I've tried nearly every other kind of protein supplement I can find. Any ideas on why they're making me feel so gross? Anybody else have this problem?? And what do I do to get in the right amount of protein???! — Anne R. (posted on June 12, 2003)

You can order the Nectar protein at http://www.vitaminshoppe.com,
http://www.wlssuccess.com or http://www.vitalady.com - among other places.

You didn't say what kind of protein you're drinking. In my 2 years I've
tried over 50 kinds and of the 50 found 3 that I really like and maybe 2
that I could tolerate in a pinch. I say that to say that there is always
something out there if you're willing to try. I figured as many horror
stories as I'd heard about supps, I'd just find one I could get down and
deal with it as medicine that I HAD to take. That's the attitude to have.
Then I lucked up and found some I actually look forward to drinking.
Anyway, look for supps with very low sugar (less than 5 grams per serving)
and very low carbs. Mix only with water and ice. Try drinking them at
different times during the day. Sometimes drinking one on an empty stomach
can make me nauseous. I know it's not the protein, rather, just the fact
that I may have drunk it too fast or that I needed something else on my
stomach.
Ask for GNC gift certs for your birthday. I get one for $100 and then I
don't feel weird about buying proteins that I may not like -- PLUS -- GNC
will take back any that you don't like as long as you have the receipt.
I eat protein too, but I don't count it in my daily intake.
Good luck and God bless!

I'm in the same boat with ya sister! Protein supps do me the same way even
when mixed with water only. I can get down the nectar without too much
discomfort but it does stick with me for a while. Order samples from
www.wlssuccess.com Meat and cheese taste and smell rancid to me so thats
out of the question. Milk products are a big no-no too. I see this problem
pop up more and more it really makes me wonder about the long term effects
of not getting in all the protein. I know several people in my support
group that just dont worry about protein intake. They just worry about
getting anything in and keeping it down. BTW, I do eat nuts and peanut
butter for a little protein. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 100

I don't have any advise, really, just wanted to commiserate (if that is the
right word, LOL!). I haven't been able to do protein shakes since surgery.
I try periodically, but they all have given me dumping-like problems. It
hasn't mattered if it were milk or water (even tried mixing it with flat
diet pop)! I'm okay with real food protein, and live off of Sci-fit's beef
stix at any given time (15 gms pro per oz). I have NOT tried the nectar or
isopure, and am totally broke right now. I'm afraid they will be too
sweet-tasting, but haven't been able to find another pro+ supplement. Good
luck! (I'll be keeping up with this thread)

I HATED meat for the first four or five months. Iw ould try to disquise it
and force it in for the protein but it didn't work too well. I tried every
protein drink around, the only one I liked was Real Meals. I started
taking it at about three or four weeks post op. It has the 60 grams of
whey protein and the whey peptides so it is one of the only protein
supplements that will be absorbed 100% post op. It also has over 40 other
vitamins and minerals including your calcium, b12 and biotin. I am 13
months post op now and still taking it. Go to www.protein-solution.com for
more info.

I was the same way. The only ones I could get down were the fruity one
through Herbalife (found them online). But now I LOVE Real Meals. I mix
the vanilla one with Diet Cranberry juice, or Crystal lite and the
chocolate with SF Tang. They are pretty good. I did have to start with
1/4 of a packet at a time (to 8 oz. of liquid) then built myself up to
making 2 servings per packet. Try that with the ones you have. Instead of
trying to get the whole serving in, make it thinner and have them 2-4 times
a day. Measure the powder out that you feel you need to get in in one day,
then break that down to 2-4 shakes and you should be able to tolerate them
more. Your system just getting used to the new way of eating, take it
easy, and just keep trying the shakes and your protein. It will get
easier.

I had this same problem for about a week and a half then it went away. I
have also had a dumping problem with some of the "sweet" shake
proteins. During this time I switched to a no flavor, no carb powdered
protien from GNC. The name escapes me but the clerk helped me pick it out.
1 scoop had 23grams of protien. I was able to add the powder to soups,
mashed potato, mashed veggies etc. It did not add any flavor and simply
made the soft foods a little thicker.

Try the Nectar ones. You can order on-line from netrition.com and other
places. I also get nauseous on the chocolate or vanilla protein shakes at
times, especially in the morning (and I've tried them all), and I'm 22
months post-op! The Nectar are easier on my stomach.

I have a similar problem with proten and with the sweet protein shakes. I
use the Designer Whey Protein Blast drinks, which are similar to the
Isopure. They aren't overly sweet (actually have a little tartness to
them) and don't give me trouble. If you have a Vitamin Shoppe in your
area, try to find them there.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm going to order some of the other proteins
suggested. Does anyone know where I can get the isopure fruity drinks
online? I couldn't seem to find them anywhere... maybe I don't have the
right name?
