Question:
Help!! I am 2 months post-op and I am vomiting what looks like tobacco .
I have thrown up for about 8 hours today. It started out like brown liquid and coffee grounds or tobacco. Now,there is less brown liquid, but still the "stuff". What do you think it is? I have put a call in to my surgeon. I am also having a great deal of back pain. I cannot hold anything down tonight, not even ice chips. — Dixie Chick (posted on May 20, 2003)

Please talk to your surgeon as soon as possible. There was a time when my
father was very sick, and he began throwing up what looked like coffee
grounds. We took him to the hospital, and it was a very serious condition
(his turned out to be bleeding in the stomach, and he was ultimately
diagnosed with cancer.) While I'm sure cancer probably isn't your problem,
but bleeding in the stomach might be. Let us know what you find out.

I recommend going to the ER. Vomit with the appearance of "Coffee
grounds" is often a sign that you're bleeding from your stomach - it's
digested blood. Please get help ASAP!

We don't want to scare you...but I agree with the previous poster, if I
were you I would go straight to the ER. It is always better to be safe
than sorry. Do not delay...go now. Please let us know what you find out.
We'll be praying for you!!!!

Lindy, I'm an RN. Coffee ground vomit means that you could be having some
internal bleeding--please contact your surgeon NOW or get yourself to the
emergency room.

After posting to your question moments ago, I searched the internet for
some info. There are many reason that could cause you to vomit what looks
like coffee grounds. One reason is a bleeding peptic ulcer. I'll be
thinking about you and praying that all goes well!

Please get to the ER immediately. You are having coffee grounds emesis,
meaning that you are vomiting old blood and have a GI Bleed
(gastro-intestinal bleeding). Could be very serious, leading to anemia,
heart attack due to a decrease in the number of red blood cells required to
carry oxygen to the heart and major organs. I'm praying that by the time
you read this post you have been treated and are OK again. Please let me
know if you are OK. Diane N

I WANTED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT I WILL BE OK!!!! THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL
YOUR LOVE AND GENUINE CONCERN FOR ME. I DID GO TO THE ER ON TUESDAY NIGHT
AFTER READING THE ANSWERS TO MY ? THEY DID TESTS AND GAVE ME A FEW BAGS OF
MEDS AND FLUIDS.THEY KEPT ME OVERNIGHT.I WENT TO MY SURGEON TODAY FOR MORE
TESTS.THEY FOUND THAT I HAVE NO BLOCKAGE OR LEAKS.MY STOMA IS VERY
SMALL,BUT THEY SAID IT WAS IN PROPORTION TO THE POUCH AND SHOULD JUST
NATURALLY STRETCH OUT. THE BLOOD WAS PROBABLY CAUSED FROM A BLOCKAGE IN THE
STOMA.WITH ALL THE VOMITING IT WAS IRRITATED AND CAUSED THE BLOOD.IT WAS
ALL CLEAR NOW.WE"LL SEE HOW IT GOES FROM HERE.
