Question:
I had one Depo shot December 1 of 03, will it slow down my weight loss?

I took one shot of depo provera and I gained 15 pounds in one month. No, it was not Christmas eating as I gained it in January, which makes since as it takes a month for it to spread through the system and be effective. Have any of you out there taken this form of birthcontrol and had successful weight loss after surgery or had problems loosing? My surgery is May 14 and I am freaking out. I've had my period now non-stop since the end of Feb. I did NOT get another shot! Help!!!! I am so mad at my doctor for not warning me. Now I feel she set me back a month in my weight loss goals.    — Sharon B. (posted on April 17, 2003)

Hi Sharon! I had my first depo shot 6 days after my RNY. I had no problems with my weight loss as I have lost 160 lbs at 10 months out. I didn't like it because I had a lot of "breakthrough bleeding" and it was just wasn't any fun to always have to wear a pad because you never knew. After two depo shots, I switched to Lunelle, the once a month birthcontrol shot and loved it!! It was perfect. but they withdrew it from the market because of manufacturing problems. BooHoo!! I am Now back to plain 'ol birthcontrol pills. It Lunelle comes back on the market I will be back on it in a heart beat!!! Good Luck! Karen

I was on depo right before my surgery and it hasnt slowed my weight loss. I am down 85 lbs in 5 months and I have no problem. I was experiencing break through bleeding but that has stopped (woohoo). But just remember that everyone experiences different things with the deposhot

Been on the shot for years..the only thing I noticed is that I got a lot of periods after the surgery (I didn't used to get them at all on the shot) and it is because your fat stores femal hormones...so once you start to lose weight they go a little wild. Anyhow, it is very easy to get pregnant after the surgery, so make sure you are on something! That would definitely slow you down on weight loss (getting preggers). I have lost 96 pounds in 9 months and never stopped my "baby vaccine". LOL

My doc had me stop my pills a week before surgery because the increase in harmones can increase the risk of blood clots. I would ask my surgeon about it .
