Question:
How likely is it a high AC1 test will postpone surgery? How high?
I have worried myself into an honest to goodness "dither". Someone on the boards mentioned a few weeks ago that their surgery was postponed because of a high AC1 test (average blood sugar over a 3 month period). This is the first time I had heard this and I have been reading the boards daily for months. I have diabetes. I don't take insulin, but I do take Amaryl and Actos. I have been taking my medicine, but my eating has been out of control waiting on my surgery on 4/7. I don't test my sugar like I should either (I know, I know - bad, bad, bad). I would have made better choices had I known that it would possibly jeopardize my surgery. I am so worried!! My pre-op tests are on Tues (4/1). — Patricia G. (posted on March 30, 2003)

Patricia, I had out of control diabetes on insulin (190 units a day then!).
My doctor knew my long term test ran high because of my struggle to
control it but was willing to use my daily monitor to judge it by. If they
are unhappy with your blood work just be honest. Tell them you eat when
stressed and that you're very stressed lately. Tell them my sugars were
"____" this morning and ask them if you can get your sugars under
control daily over the next month and can prove it with your monitor if
that would be OK. As I understand it they want your sugars under control
at the time of the surgery. They may not even be interested in your sugars
2 or 3 months ago.

My surgery was scheduled for March 24th. At my pre-op testing on March
12th I was diagnosed to be diabetic and they postponed my surgery. My
doctor told me to get my blood sugars under 180 and have a Hg a1c of 9 or
lower before he would operate. I was at a 12 on March 13th and I am being
tested again Monday. My doctor will not operate on anyone with high blood
sugar and a Hg a1c result above 9. Maybe your doctor is different?

I had this surgery because even with 4 shots of insulin a day and 3
different oral medications, my blood sugars were over 200 fasting. Doctors
are all different. I believe my blood sugars were over 200 when I went into
surgery, my dh was worried they would cancel surgery but they didn't. Check
with your surgeon so you don't worry yourself sick. I left the hospital
still on insulin and it wasn't until I was 7 months out that I got off all
meds for diabeties.
