Question:
Wierd weight loss?

I am 8 weeks out and have found that about every 4-5 days my weight loss will stall for a day or so. Then it will start up again and I will lose another 1-2 pounds and so on. I started out with a BMI of 46 and it is now down to 41. Does this make a difference? I've lost 35lbs since Jan 15, which to a person that is "immediate gratification" motivated, seems slow. Too, this 6 month "honeymoon" what exactly is it? I'm confused. — daytymer (posted on March 13, 2003)

I am still pre-op, but thought I would answer your question about the "honeymoon" period.
The first 6 months after WLS is considered the honeymoon period because this is when you loose weight the fastest.(the more you have to lose, the faster you lose it) By 6 months are you are on "regular" food, and more then likly, the cravings start coming back. Your body is getting use to its new tool. You have to work harder to keep losing.
hope this helped! =c D

hi :o) my surgery was 12-2-02... i lost weight just like you are... in spurts. stick a 19 day plateau in there at the beginning of the 2nd month, and i was ready to go jump off a cliff... but now, halfway thru the 3rd month, things have leveled off somewhat. now, about twice to three times a month, i see a weight loss. the rest of the time i'm just stuck... but it's an 'ok' kind of stuck, i've lost almost 70 lbs so far... hang in there, if you're doing the water, protein and exercise thing, then it will happen for you. by the way, i started out as what some would call a lightweight (255) and that does make a difference on how your weight comes off. also, please remember everyone is unique, and what happens to one person, won't necessarily happen for another. God Bless...

I bet if you made a graph, you would see a pattern. I did. Everyone differ's on the "honeymoon" I had 16 months of steady weight loss and then it stopped. I think your doing very well!

Hi Laurey, I think you are focused a little too much on the scale. I think most of us probably lost the same way but I didn't weigh more than once a week, sometimes every 2 weeks. Your progress really isn't in question that way and you don't get the pitfalls and disappointments of hitting those mini plateaus we all love to hate. As far as the "honeymoon" goes, I think the previous post was right. The 6 months honeymoon is the time that you could probably sit on your rear and do absolutely nothing and the weight would still come off. It's just like a new marriage in the sense that you are getting to know someone or something, in this case (your pouch) and learning to live with one another. Discovering what works and what doesn't work and coming to some sort of understanding. That probably sounds silly but the best analogy I could come up with. Anyway, I hope that helps. And by all means, lock up that scale for a week at a time and I bet you'll feel a whole lot better about your rate of losing. :)

I am still pre-op, but the other day someone posted a condenced version of 'pouch rules for dummies'. In it it described the honeymoon period- the time you can loose weight effortless- BUT it also stated that to get the most of this period- you should exercise and eat right as It will be the ONLY time that you will be able to lose this fast again. Basically it said- do everything you can to maximine the effects of this period. If you want to read it just search for the topic of pouch rules in the library. It was just posted last week. Good Luck.
