My doctor also required a pre-op weight loss. He required 10% and I weighed 299. I paniced but was determined to have the surgery. I had an english muffin or 1/2 bagel with light cream cheese or 1/2 tsp of jelly for breakfast. For lunch I had a lean cuisine dinner and for dinner a salad with turkey and very little dressing. I started in July and had lost 27 by my surgery date of Oct 22. The very best part of this is now I can say I have lost 92 lbs counting the 27 pre-op.

One thing that is a small change that makes a big difference is to eliminate all drinks containing sugar...I did this for a month (I also gave up caffeine and carbonation, just to see if I could), and lost 10 lbs without dieting at all. Another quick way to lose weight is Atkin's (high protein, very low carbs, no sugar) this diet is not healthy for long term dieting, but I think if it's vital for you to lose weight quickly it works very well! Good luck

I was going to say an Atkins- based diet. It can be rough on some people, and staying in ketosis over a long period of time can strain our hearts. But increase your protein and decrease your carbs, sord of like how you will eat post-op, so atleast you can get used to it. And like the previous poster said, I've heard from many people who cut out all soda and suagry drinks and have lost weight. (Not sure if you drink them now) Try to limit snacking if you can- I know it's hard! Also, consistency can help, too. If you have the same thing for lunch everyday and switch between a few different dinners, like grilled chicken and fish and beef, that seems to always help me! Goodluck to you!

I would advise the Atkin's diet. I myself have to lose 30 lbs. and i'm already down 15 in 2 weeks. Although I cheated more than once. When I am on it, to accelerate my weight loss, I ate less than 10 carbs a day (I was coming close to my deadline). I'm not advising that you do that, but the Atkins diet is the way to go, to get weight off fast. If you have trouble with that, try "The Dieter's Tea". I know it's available at the 99 cent store. But I don't advise it if you are out and about. It's more for at home.. if you know what I mean.

Something simple...Writing everything I ate down on paper and eating six small meals a day helped me lose. Writing things down really made me aware of what I ate and made me think before I just grabbed something. Combine this with some extra daily activity should help even more. Best of luck!

Instead of writing everything down, go out to http://www.fitday.com and register for a free membership. This will keep track of the total amount of calories, protein, carbs, fats and other nutrients that you are taking in. It also has areas to keep track of your activities and there is even room for a daily journal. I've had a Fitday membership and have been updating it daily since I was 3 weeks post-op...JR

Hi Maureen.. a diet high in protein and low in carbs, sugars and fats (such as Atkins) would help you.. however, before you go fork out money for books or other stuff.. try following a simple pyramid. When you buy food.. read the labels.. or check on the Internet if you are comfortable with that... look first at PROTEIN.. it should be the number you are most concerned with, as packing in protein is going to maintain your muscle mass and allow you to burn fat. So, note the protein number for a serving. THEN look at FAT.. the fat grams per serving should be NO MORE THAN half the protein count.. lastly, check out the grams of CARBS.. if the carb count per serving is NO MORE THAN DOUBLE the PROTEIN.. it's a winner! My surgeon puts her patients on a 'lovely' cottage cheese and tuna diet.. where you eat nothing but tuna fish, low fat cottage cheese and supplemental protein drinks 70% of the time. You can tinker with the tuna and cottage cheese, adding things.. so long as nothing you add increases the fat, sugar, or carbs of the main ingredient. I enjoyed yellow mustard and dill relish in my tuna, and salsa on my cottage cheese.. among other things. It took me a few months after surgery to be able to eat tuna or cottage cheese again (oh and spoil yourself, get the solid white albacore in water, it's worth it!) but now I'm okay with it. I hope this info gives you some ideas and I wish you the best..

Hi, My surgeon has people go on a "skim milk only" diet. You get to drink all the milk you can in 5 - 10 minutes and have one glass at bedtime. I lost 27 pounds in 26 days. It was far tougher than the post-op diet and I did eat a few carrots in there. But it gets you used to not chewing; it gives you lots of protein. I felt much more energetic at surgery and, most importantly, my liver shrunk (you lose there first) which put my lap ryn surgery time at under 4 hours. Good luck!

I myself have to lose 35 lbs before surgery. My Dr. recommends and also sells the Pro Cal 100 meal replacement shakes. You have 3 shakes a day and 1 light meal, you usually average less that 800 calories a day. They are pretty good as long as you stay away from the strawberry...Yuck! Good Luck!

I had 2 weeks to lose 10 pounds or my surgery would be rescheduled. I went on Atkins and walked the dog every night for a mile and did Nordic Track for 15 minutes a day. I lost 18 pounds in a week. I agree that long-term I would not recommend Atkins but I was never hungry and it was very easy to do. Go on the internet and download information (don't buy the books). Good luck, whatever you do stick to it and remember why you started down this path to begin with. I am 4 weeks post-op and down a total of 40 pounds.
