Question:
How do they test for H.Pylori?
I was told by my Dr.'s office that I need to be tested for this. I have my final pre-op testing tomorrow which is being done at the hospital lab. They didn't say anything about scopes. Is this just a simple blood test. I was told they do the lab work 2 1/2 weeks prior to surgery so you can be treated for this if the test comes back positive. I am so worried that this will come back positive and I'll have to postpone my surgery. I did check in the library but didn't find an answer to my question but did find a lot of responses about it taking weeks and even months to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance for any answers and/or words of encouragment. — denisel (posted on March 2, 2003)

I was tested for H-Pylori with a simple blood test. It was over a year ago
and had nothing to do with me having surgery. I tested positive and had to
take a very strong set of antibiotics....10 or 12 pills a day for 30 days.
All the pills were the size of a mulit-vitamin....very large. If you test
positive and have to take them, I sugget taking them in ice cream. It
helped me get them down. I have never had to be scoped....thank God! Good
luck and God bless!

My husband tested positive for H-Pyolri and was treated in 2 weeks time by
taking two very strong antibiotics twice a day. He was having very bad
stomach pains and indigestion with everything he ate. If you're not
experiencing symptoms, my guess would be that your test results will be
negative. If it does come back positive you'll have enough time for the
treatment.

It can be tested two ways, blood work, or by being scoped (EGD), and a
small tissue sample is taken and tested. Prev Pac is the Rx it contains 30
mg Prevacid, 500mg Amoxicillian, and 500 mg. Erythrimycian.
