Question:
Any catholics out there? What did you do about communion?
I was wondering if taking communion during mass would be harmful to my pouch. I know they say to stay away from breads for awhile. I am also having surgery during lent- and is it o.k. to go without the meat on Fridays- My surgeon does not require protein shakes and actually discourages it.I guess I can eat eggs and cheese. Any suggestions from the catholic people out there would be helpful. Thanks. — Jan S. (posted on February 26, 2003)

I have not had a problem with taking Communion. As far as Lent goes, you
can have eggs, cheese, fish, shellfish and even tofu if you like that type
of stuff *G*. If you really want to get down to it, as you are recovering
from surgery, you would be excused.

From http://www.catholic.org:
Those who are excused from fast or abstinence Besides
those outside the age limits, those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail,
pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or nourishment, manual
laborers according to need, guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves
without giving great offense or causing enmity and other situations of
moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline.

good news..i am post op 9 weeks and have recieved for the last 8 weeks. i
let the host melt on my tongue, and i am fine. for my first 2 months post
op i was eating pureee and liquids. at this point i am adding tuna,
chicken and fish. you do not need to have your protein from meat or
poultry. be creative and use eggs, cheese orwhatever works best for you.
good luck!

I had surgery at a catholic hospital- they gave me communion the day after
surgery=once the host was in my mouth, I was like "oh no, I shouldn't
eat this", but I just let it dissolve on my tongue, no problem!

I also recieved communion in the hospital after my leak test. I asked for a
small piece and I also let it disolve in my mouth.

I agree with the other posters that you can participate in communion.
However, do you really think God will mind if you had to skip once or
twice? I think he'd understand.

I also was concerned but in talking with my priest, he said," This is
of our Lord Jesus Christ" This is a holy thing and anything holy
cannot harm you. Father and I agreed that when my time comes, he would
give me communion with a small piece of wafer and a small sip of wine.
Good Luck

I had communion in the hospital the day after my sugery. The nun that gave
it to me broke off a tiny piece for me and said I could drink a little
juice to help it down. After I got out of the hospital, I went to church
and made a short side trip to the drinking fountain after receiving
communion to make the bigger host wet and get it to dissolve easier. Never
had trouble with it. As for lent, you can still have eggs, cheese,
seafood, etc... as one of the previous posters mentioned, if necessary,
you can still eat meat because you are recovering from surgery. Don't
sweat it - God understands.

There are many high protein alternatives to meat if you're concerned about
it. What are you planning to do about fasting? It would fall into the
same category.
I am a firm believer that you are only given what you can handle.

The hospital where I had surgery is a Catholic hospital and I am a Roman
Catholic as well. They gave me communion the day after surgery and it was
the only carb I was allowed until I lost 75% of my excess weight.
