Any catholics out there? What did you do about communion?

I was wondering if taking communion during mass would be harmful to my pouch. I know they say to stay away from breads for awhile. I am also having surgery during lent- and is it o.k. to go without the meat on Fridays- My surgeon does not require protein shakes and actually discourages it.I guess I can eat eggs and cheese. Any suggestions from the catholic people out there would be helpful. Thanks.
