Question:
Excess Amount of Saliva
I have checked the boards and I understand this overproduction of saliva is a normal part of the process. It can fill the pouch and cause me to vomit foam at times. (Yes, I have sinus problems which also contributes to the related nausea.) Can anyone tell me how long to expect it last? I am coming up on 5 weeks post op and just want to get a reasonable idea of what to expect. Thank you! — Angela D. (posted on January 26, 2003)

Angela, I don't remember for sure but I seem to think it lasted about 2-3
months. It was very annoying to be sure But this too shall pass!lol Good
luck to you and God Bless, Leah

I am almost 11 mths post-op, and I still get that extra saliva accumulation
once in a while, but it only happens after I've eaten too fast, or haven't
chewed well enough.

Ugh, I'd forgotten about this side effect! I think it went away at around
3 months out. Meanwhile, under the tutelage of my brother, I took the
opportunity to refine my "hawking" technique. (Sigh...when given
lemonades...make lemonade. :D)

Hi Angela, I had almost forgotten about this also. It was a miserable
situation to be in. With the first bite of food, up would come the extra
saliva/w the first bite and then I could go ahead and eat. It started at
about six weeks post op and stopped about three months post op. No clue
why it started or stopped just glad it is over. Good luck with yours.

About 4 to 5 months post op, I found that each time I would eat, my mouth
would begin to water, then a few minutes later, I would throw-up a great
deal of mucus and foam. I finally talked to my doctor and he put me on
Zantac 150 mg. He told me it was more of an allergic reaction in my
stomach. I'm now 13 months post op and have finally stopped taking the
Zantac. Now the only time I get the excess saliva and vomiting is when I
eat too fast or too much. Hope this helps.
