Question:
I need help with loosing before Drs. consult.
I have a consult visit coming up Feb. 19th. with Dr. Foster in Burlingame. I have been told that she requires that you loose 10% of your weight prior to surgery. But right now, I am having problems with a bottomless pit for a stomach. What can I do to curb the eating and loose at least 5% (12-14lbs.) before my consult? Any help would be appreciated. — Cindy P. (posted on January 21, 2003)

Cindy: Try a high-protein, low-carb regimen. You'll probably be eating
this way after WLS anyway. Check out the Atkins diet at
"atkinscenter.com." There's a lot of good free info there. I
tried it last spring and was able to lose about 18 pounds in about a month.
Of course, I gained that back. But I know some people who have been able
to stick with it, especially short term. Good luck to you!

I don't know if you want to do this but I had my dr. put me on Phentermine
(I needed one more supervised diet)and I lost 32 lbs in about 1.5 months.
I did low cal and did not cheat. I went from 308 down to 276, but now that
I am not taking it I am at 282!!! It's a thought!!!

I'm confused - why do you want to loose before your consult? You won't get
"credit" for that, will you? My doc didn't require weight loss
but I lost 26 pounds anyway - not trying. I started to work out and tried
to eat well to get my diabetes under control - without success. On the
other hand I'm now 6 1/2 months post op, down 86 pounds (112 if you count
the pre op weight loss) and my last A1C was NORMAL. I do recommend working
out - lifting weights so your arms and legs are stronger for pulling
yourself up and protecting your belly. Good luck
