Question:
Can we eat air popped popcorn, strawberries, pears, and pineapple?
I had my surgery on October 29, 2002 and have lost 68lbs so far. I love air popped popcorn, strawberries, pears and pineapple. Can we have these? Also, what about rice? And one more question: I also love salad, but only have a one ounce stomach. I've heard that our stomachs can handle a larger amount of certain foods like watermellon and salad. Can anyone else with a 1 oz stomach advise how much salad they eat? Thanks much, Susan C. — Susan C. (posted on January 20, 2003)

i'll probably get yelled at for saying this, but i eat popcorn almost
everyday. you can eat the fruits too, just remember that there is natural
sugar in the fruit. i had a ton of watermelon in the summer and then found
out about the sugar. luckily i have never dumped though. open rny 5-2-02

I eat a lot of air-popped popcorn too. I'm 4 months post-op, and I don't
feel the popcorn has hindered my loss at all. It satisfies my
"crunchy" cravings. If it doesn't bother your stomach to eat it,
I say go ahead!

If it weren't for popcorn i would go stir crazy, i have almost every day,
sometimes i pop a bag and store it, and munch on it through out the day at
work, it either that or i will find the need to start smoking again, must
be that need for oral stimulation, chewing, i am also a gum freak, and
peanut monger. Good luck.

I love popcorn. I do measure it out because it's easy to overeat since it
basically turns to poof and I can eat too much if not careful. I eat
strawberries, pears, pineapple (though it's not a fav of mine). I eat rice
too but be careful to chew it. Sometimes rice sticks together and it's
important to get it separated before it goes down. My sis-in-law can't eat
rice, it seems to swell in her tummy and make her miserable, I have no
trouble with it. The reason you can eat more watermelon and salad is
because they are both mostly water and really go down in volume once
chewed. I can eat a regular sort of dinner salad with no trouble. Salad
with a pro thrown in is one of my favorite snacks.
good luck

I have had all of the above! I'm not a big fan of popcorn, at least pre-op
anyway, but I enjoy some plain, air popped corn with my husband on the
weekends! I did not have any until about 8 months out, I just couldn't
take the chance of hurling! Fruit is okay but I've never been a fan of the
syrupy stuff--the light or fresh varieties are best. I cannot handle a
large amount of salad--not even a small side salad, it's just too much for
me at this point.

I can tolerate all those foods except pineapple. I miss that but so far
have not been able to keep it down. I also have to peel the pears before I
eat them. I can eat about 1 cup of salad greens at one time. I really
relish it but I do have problems with some salad fixings like raw onions,
cucumbers and radishes but they are easy to avoid. Shrimp salad is a
staple for me.

Hi there, Susan! I have had almost all of those. My dietician was
surprised that I could tolerate rice. I don't have it everyday but do
every once in a while. The pear I had to peel as well, but no problems
with it. Still haven't tried watermelon yet. Vi open RNY 9/23/02 down 93

You are far enough out that you should be able to eat all of those things.
I, too, have popcorn almost every day. I find it to be a good
"crunchy" snack, and its full of fiber which keeps ya regular, if
you know what I mean! Fruits are also great-I use frozen strawberries and
fresh pineapple in protein shakes. And salad is fine. Add protein to the
salad by adding grilled meats, beans, hard boiled eggs and cheese. It makes
a great lunch. The size of your tummy doesn't matter. And over time, the
1 oz tummy will stretch naturally to accomodate a good 6-8 oz of food.
Watery foods, like fruits and salads, you will always be able to eat more
of, than more dense things, like meats. As for rice, I can eat a little
bit of it, but too much and its not a comfy pouch so I don't eat it often.

Everyone is different. I am 15 months out. At your point, I couldn't eat
anything you mentioned. I was able to eat fruits at 5 months, salad and
popcorn at 8 months and I doubt I will ever be able to eat rice. The best
advice is to try to introduce new foods one at a time and it is best to do
it when you are at home in case you have a bad reaction.

I have been eating all of the above since 2 months out, no prob, except for
rice, I can eat sushi with rice, but I cannot eat regular white rice. (they
are different varieties of rice) If I don't have fresh fruit I don't feel
good.
