Question:
Supplements! Mgs. Mcg.'s? Can you take too much?
Went to the store today to pick up some supplements to start taking now 3 weeks preop. I picked up Centrum, Zinc, Biotin and Hair, Skin and Nail. Anyone know how many milligrams or micrograms I should be taking of each for good healing and possibly less hair loss. Is there anything I should add? Also I notice that the Centrum and the Skin, Hair and Nail also contain zinc and biotin. Can you take too much? Thanks! — lindadougherty (posted on January 17, 2003)

Yes, you can take too much vitamins. I have a little pullout from
Prevention that gives the daily values (or recommended intakes) and then
the safe upper limits for each. Each mineral/vitamin also says what it's
used for.
Zinc: DV 15 mg. (Zinc is one of the minerals most lacking in US diet) 30
mg is safe Upper Limit. (Too little zinc weakens immunity; but so does too
much.)
Biotin: 300 mcg DV. 2500mcg is safe upper limit.
Hope this helps a little bit. take care :) and good luck!

How many agree with me that pre ops probably are very well nourished and
likely dont need vitamins? I mean think about all we could eat before
surgery, how could we be vitamin deficent? Although women might have low
iron...

Actually my doctor said hair loss is only temporary and that there was no
conclusive evidence that it would eventually stop. But hey I am bald as a
friar so what do I know.
