Question:
this is what I heard about carbs and fats
i heard that carbs and fats are measured this way; when determining carb amounts 15 carbs (like what it would say on the back of a box) adds up to one full carb..so say if theres 30 carbs that equals 2 full carbs..same with fat..each 5 grams equals one full gram of fat..has anyone else heard this and is it correct? — christine S. I think that is the system for and exchange diet , such as what a diabetic
might follow, a certain number of grams of carbs equals 1 exchange.

The last person that posted was kinda correct. I am a diabetic and I use
that way to count carbs, I have not had my surgery, I am still waiting for
insurance to approve, but the exchange thing is weight watchers, the 15
grams is 1 carb is the diabetic diet. Like I am allowed 1 to 2 carbs for
breakfast, that is no more than 30 grams.

I have never heard of carbs referred to that way. 1 Gram of carbohydrate
equals 4 calories, 1 gram of protien equals 4 calories and 1 gram of fat
equals 9 calories, so you can see that it takes about half the amount of
protien or carbs to equal the calorie content of fat. problem with carbs is
that for an obese person they undermine the weight loss process because
carbs turn to sugar quickly which are metabolized quickly, doesnt give you
body a chance to burn stored sugar basically. Protiens are better because
your body needs protien as a basic building block. and you can still burn
stored calories faster. Hope all this makes sense to you.

so then this would not apply for me?

No, it does not apply to you. Diabetic exchanges are as follows: Total
carbohydrate 15 grams on a food label equals 1 carb "exchange".
7 grams of protein is a meat exchange, and 5 grams of fat is a fat
exchange. Most diabetics now count actual grams, not exchanges.

Why do you think that you should be limited to 30g carbs per day? Are you
on an Atkins diet or something? My nutritionist says that we should be
getting 30% of our calories in through protein, 50% through carbs (you need
carbs for energy) and 20% through fat. So if you were doing 1000 calories
a day (which is like a 6-month post-op level), you should get in 300
calories from protein (75g), 500 calories from carbs (125g) and 200
calories from fat (about 22g). If you don't get in enough carbs, then your
body has to use protein for energy instead of using it for muscle mass and
healing as such...JR (open RNY 07/17 -139#)

It's simple. Determine the carb content of everything you eat (you can
use a site such as fitday.com to keep track of things for you). Add up
the carbs eaten.
<p>
As far as targets, talk to your surgeon or nutritionist as to the total
amount of calories that he wants you to take in and the % of protein, carbs
and fat that he wants you to eat. Then multiply the total calories by the
percentages (as I did in my previous posts) to get the amount of calories
that should be taken in via protein, carbs and fats. Take that amount of
calories and divide by 4 for protein and carbs (since there are 4 calories
in 1g of protein/carbs) and divide by 9 for fats (since there are 9
calories in 1g of fats). This will give you the grams of protein, carbs
& fats to take in daily for that calorie level...JR

Christine,
Hi! I am one of those people who try to limit my carbs to 30 to 40
grams a day because I found that I lose more weight that way. I have a
calorie book and I look up everything that I eat. I will give you a few
examples of some of the things and the carb content. String cheese
(1gm),1/2 cup cottage cheese (4gm), 3oz turkey lunchmeat (3gm), chicken
(ogm), 25 almonds (6gm), 1 oz swiss cheese (1gm), 2 oz beef jerkey (6 oz),
1 scoop protein powder (4gm), chef salad (5gm), lg egg (1gm), 3 oz shrimp
(ogm), 3 oz tuna (ogm), 1/2 can green beans (7gm).
I have around 700-800 calories a day. I will be 9 months post-op on
the 18th and I am down 143 pounds. I just have found that I do better when
I watch my carbs. I don't worry so much about the fat grams and I get 80-90
grams of protein in. I hope this helps. Again this is just my experience
and I know everyone is different. Good luck to you. Cheryl
