Question:
Can anyone tell me the physiological reason for dumping fat
It seems that everytime I try a food with a little too much fat (tonights mistake=pizza, and I blotted off the oil!!)I get very nauseaus and my heart races. This lasts 20 - 30 minutes. I have read explainations as to why we dump sugar after a RNY, can anyone explain the reason we may dump fats? I know it wasn't eating too fast, the half a slice (and I left over most of the crust) took me well over half an hour)THanks! — Linda 1. (posted on January 4, 2003)

There are two parts to dumping on sugar - and one of those explains the
dumping with fat. That is the rapid movement of the high-fat and
concentrated sugars through the pouch and into the intestines.

The second part of the sugar dumping is the hypoglycemic reaction when the
insulin dumped into the system in reaction to the appearance of the sugar
in the small intestine is too much for the short spike of blood sugar and
then blood sugar dips too rapidly.

BTW, I dump on high-fat stuff too. I made the mistake of eating corn dog
nuggets at Walt Disney World last week and I felt crappy for 30-40
minutes...JR

I'm with John. I never dump on sugar but too much fat and away I go. Oh
and too many starchy-carbs do me in too.

Are you sure it was the fat or the sugar in the tomato sauce on the pizza?

im not a doc or a scientist so im not sure how accurate my answer will be
but heres my two cents worth anyway...most high fat items contain massive
amounts of starchy carbs which convert alomost immediatly to suger in the
body (starts in the mouth actually) so this could be a reason that they
make some posties dump. I dump on fats and not sugergo figure lol

The amount of sugar in tomato sauce is so trivial, that I would assume that
it is the fat as well. I also dump on greasy, fatty foods. They don't sit
well with my stomach, and don't process well in the intestines. Just as
well, I don't want it anyway, maybe because I do dump on that kind of food.
Either way, I'm thankful for my newfound fat aversion. I think that John
Rushton provided a thorough answer as to why.

I dump on any high fat food and all dairy. I can handle very slight
amounts of sugar like the amount in a Balance Gold bar, but not artificial
sweeteners like maltitol or manitol. Go figure. I can eat french
fries(only about 4-6), 2-3 fried shrimp if they are crispy, but not fried
chicken. I can't tolerate hardly any kind of salad dressing. Fat free
dressing make me dump and any with dairy make me dump. I can tolerate
mayonnaise in chicken salad as long as it's real mayo and not fat free or
low fat. I handle butter on a baked potato, but not sour cream. I can eat
very small amounts of cream cheese in some recipes but I don't eat much in
the way of bread or bagels, they just don't sit well in my pouch. I guess
we just have to learn what works for us as individuals and accept that some
foods will not treat us as kindly as they do others. For me, the times
when something doesn't agree with me are blessed reminders that I have a
weight loss tool and it's still working well. Good luck and don't forget
the water!!! lol.

I don't think the reaction to high-fat food is true "dumping" but
it sure feels bad! I also have problems with greasy or deep-fried foods,
especially grease + bread or heavily breaded foods. I have dumped (true
dumping on sugar) MANY times :P but the sickest I ever got was from buffalo
chicken tenders. I thought I could pull the breading off but I couldn't. It
lasted MUCH longer than a sugar reaction and I truly wished I would just
die already. LOL I don't know why this happens but it is sure a convenient
excuse to not eat a bunch of fried stuff. Luckily I don't care for mayo or
salad dressing any more anyway so I don't miss those sloppy mayo-drenched
sandwiches I used to eat.
