Question:
Fruit Juices with Sugar
My doctor told me that I could have ANYTHING down the fruit juice isle. It doesnt matter if it is sugar free or not. Did anyone else drink the fruit juices with sugar? Like Hawaiian Punch, Apple Juice, Passion Fruit Juice, Capri Sun, etc.......????? Thank you!!! — Christine S. (posted on December 29, 2002)

I was informed to drink for example, if I were to have an 8 oz/ glass of
juice (grape, orange, etc.) then to only put 4 oz. of juice in the glass
and fill it with 4 oz/ of water to dilute it. I was also told this was the
rule of thumb for all juices and "permanent" way to have juice
without dumping.

I have drank some fruit juices with sugar but I've watched the amount of
sugar in each. Apple and grape are the lowest. Hawaiian Punch and Capri Sun
do not contain fruit juice and have lots of sugar and calories. I've sipped
my kids here and there, but never drank a whole one. I just don't like the
feeling I get when I do too much sugar at once. Liquids give me that
feeling quicker than solids. I get a head rush feeling and then a
tightening feeling from too much sugar. Then, I either get very sleepy or
very overheated. My advice is to limit yourself to 100% fruit juice and
watch the sugar grams. I don't know why your doctor gave you free rein on
the juice aisle.....most of the fruit mixes or look-a-like juices have as
much sugar as a regular Coca-cola.

Watch out for the sugar. My suggestion would be juicy juice, 100% juice
over ice.

The one time I had juice (some Mystic something) I learned quickly what the
meaning of dumping was. There I was in a movie theater wishing it would be
over..LOL. I have, however, been drinking Gatorade since three days after
surgery and it has been my savior. LAP-RNY on October 8, 2002 and down 62
as of today.

I've had juices since day one...diuted at first and then full strength.
And yes, with sugar. Even the orange stuff they sell at McDonalds, Sunny
D, etc....didn't bother me at all. I think each of us differ in a big big
way with the affects of sugar, so trial and error seems to be the best way
to go. Good Luck to ya! (10-29 open and - 53 and counting!) :o) Trish

Hawaiian Punch? Like someone else said, you might as well drink a regular
Coke ;)
I drink a lot of the fruity Crystal Light and Sugar Free Tang. I used to
drink a lot of juice and still miss it, but these usually stop my cravings.

I think it varies with each person. I drink every type of juice and it's
never bothered me yet I feel dizzy when I eat breakfast cereal, so who
knows. I've found that you need to do a lot of trial and error in order to
figure out what you can eat and what you can't.

OK, here's the scoop. FRUIT JUICE is juice from an actual fruit (not a
boobleberry tree like some of the kid's "juice" drinks ;). It
contains fructose that usually doesn't bother WLSers. JUICE DRINKS can
contain as little as 10% juice. The rest is sugar. As in candy. As in
"the evil one" that causes dumping. My advice would be to stick
with only those labelled "100% fruit juice." I also limit the
amount of fruit juice I drink because it adds calories with minimal
nutrition and satisfaction. There are some good flavors out there in 100%
fruit juice. The ones with Pooh on them taste the best to me and come in a
reasonably sized box.

I know we really prefer sugar-free drinks and juices, but lets face it,
this society feels like everyone HAS to have sugar or sugar products...so,
we have to *improvise*. One way I do this is to dilute it with an equal
amount or more of water. Sometimes my "juice" reminds me of
Fruit20. It's good, the only thing is Fruit20 is sweetened with
Splenda~~YUMMMY!!

Juice hasn't ever caused dumping with me but I avoid it anyway. Most
juices have as many or more calories per ounce than coke, sweet tea, etc.
and actually have little nutritional value. I don't think juice is
"taboo" but I find that other sugar free beverages are equally as
satisfying to me without having the basically empty calories.
Although.....from time to time.........a small glass of Tropicana Pure
Premium sure hits the spot! Happy New Year!

When I came home my best friend staying with me got my some juice cocktails
and I drank them for 3 days, not realizing what I was drinking. They made
me dump. Juicy juice even made my bm's loose. Orange juice seems to do
better, but everyone is different! Best of luck. RNY 11-19-02 down 48
pounds!

I didn't go near fruit juices until about 6 months post. Then I started
drinking apple juice with a ton of ice to water it down a bit. If I have a
small glass at a time its no problem for me, but be careful....they do have
a lot of sugar.
