Question:
BUT HERE GOES!!!!!!!!!!

I was wondering if there was anyone who will step up to the base, as I am doing and admit that they sometimes eat pieces of candy (such as a choc covered caramel) or they eat pototae chips (maybe 5-6 of them ) Or even if you drink regular soda such as (papesi- coke-etc. And here is the real question I am asking if you have done this and still lost your weight can you give us some examples of what you eat or ate, and how much you have lost in what amount of time?. Thanks to all of you who answer this honesty. PLEASE NO NEGATIVE ( WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO) I am not looking for negative, just honesty.    — Schatzie1 (posted on December 28, 2002)

I'll admit to it! I don't drink pop at all. I can't handle the sugar or carbonation. But as far as potatoe chips, pretzels, breads - sure I eat them - almost on a daily basis. I don't eat candies too much because I can't tolerate the sugars. This Christmas though, I'd take bites of a caramel turtle for example and give the rest to my husband. I also had a small piece of pumpkin pie. We're not dead for God's sake and let me tell you, I'm down 125 pounds in 7 1/2 months, so I guess it's okay to divulge every once in awhile. I also eat popcorn on every night for a snack. I always make sure I get my proteins, but I don't run away from carbs. Good luck!

Hi, I am 4 months out and down 60lbs. I have eaten candy, tho it just doesn't taste as good as before. But I had to try it--my downfall prior to surgery was turtles. If I am served chips with a sandwich, I do eat a couple. With the chips I get rid of them them right away, so I don't eat them. I haven't eaten any bread for the most part, I throw it away with the sandwich and eat the protein. I don't drink soda anymore--don't like the taste. When I eat out, I ofen order desert, but only have a taste, then push it away. I believe these foods will always be around us, so I have to learn how to handle them. Good luck, I hope this helps....

Hi. 14 months post op here. Down 110 lbs. from 286. These past few days I've had a horrible stomach virus. Couldn't even get out of bed. Had to have a friend make a run to the store for me. She bought me a regular 2 litre of Sprite to keep me hydrated. In the past couple of days I've sipped the entire bottle....haven't dumped and this is one time I feel my body actually NEEDED the sugary liquid to replenish what I had lost and to stay hydrated. I've never been a soda pop drinker, even pre-op, so no, I don't feel bad about drinking it and when I'm better, I'll get back to my old routine. As for candy, yes, I've been known to eat a Hershey's kiss or two, or a piece of hard candy or a bit of a candy cane. Life goes on. We had this surgery as a tool. That doesn't mean we have to be martyrs and live such a STRUCTURED life that there is no more enjoyment. Stay well on your journey and congratulations. P/S I think what has helped me the most is EXERCISE....I can't wait to get back to my routine.

Yes, I eat regular treats now and again. I usually counter balance it by doing more exercise or cutting back the next day. I do snack a lot in general, but it's usually fat free and low calorie stuff. I don't drink regular soda, but I drink Diet Coke like it's going outta style. In fact, I think it pumps through my veins. (Wow chips and diet coke are a food group in my house) Since loosing weight doesn't have to be my New Years resolution this year, I think kicking the diet coke habit will be! Best wishes! -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -145

The point about these items is are they trigger foods. There are foods that I don't allow in the house because I know one is not enough. If you like to kid yourself, I guess you could try. But most of the oldies have a treat or two occasionally. But, if it takes you over, you will have to go back to step one. And that is hard. Things liquid w/surgar like soda is very dangerous.

I have to admit I eat candy here and there, pringle chips now and again and even drink regular pop on a daily basis. I had lap rny on 2/19/02 and as of today, 10 months post op I am down 140#'s from 316#'a to 176#'s.....but I make sure I keep it in check as to what I am doing, I have had one too many hershey kisses at a time, and gotten sick from them, ususally two is fine, anymore and you will be sorry. I dont usually dump, I generally get sick and have to throw up. Hope this helps! Happy New Year!!

I snack- I can eat candy - I do not drink sugary or carbonated drinks- (tome that is the one way to get in loads of calories without getting full)~ I compensate by making sure that my meals are 75% protein. My new life is all about moderation!

I am over 2.5 years post-op, and I have to admit that I do eat sweets. I don't usually dump (probably b/c I have learned not to go overboard!)... and I admit, I am one to push the envelope. I started at about 315#, and I'm down to about 155# now. I wear a size 8-10, depending, and I finally for the first time in my life feel NORMAL. I didn't have this surgery so that I'd have to totally hide from sugars, junk food, etc. - but I do recognize and realize that they are trigger foods. However, that said, if I really really want something, I don't deprive myself! I never have. The one thing I will NOT do is drink regular sodas... just can't bring myself to do it! Pepsi used to be my big downfall, before this surgery. Now, I drink diet coke (and of course, lots and lots of water). It's funny, sometimes, how I can justify eating part of a doughnut, but will NOT touch the soda! LOL. Anyway... I think it's all about moderation. And, of course, following the advice of your doctor and dieticians. Happy Holidays!

I had surgery 2.5 years ago. On occasion, I crave potato chips, I think because of the salt or potassium. Sweets are something I just cannot stay away from. I try not to eat them regularly, but sometimes it is hard. Particularly, I crave chocolate, which has some minerals in it that our bodies need. I originally had lost 140 lbs. I have regained 15 lbs of the weight. I thought after having gotten through the first year, that I would never want or need to have sweets again. However, I find that at times I do revert back to old patterns.

Great question!! I LOVE POTATO CHIPS!!! I eat them all the time. I stay away from Soda. I occasionally eat small pieces of candy. Sweet Tarts are one of my favorite!! I have lost all of my weight. Actually, I am under my goal. I am 5'7" and my personal goal was 135 (charts say 147). I am now 126!!! And.....I just had my tummy tuck on Monday, Dec 23rd. I am anxious to see what I will weigh once all the fluid and swelling goes down. The way I see it is....we are normal. We are not on a "diet". Eat like a normal person and you will be just fine.

I am only just under 8 weeks post op. I am still treading lightly as I begin a general diet. I HATE that word 'diet'. If I could diet, I wouldn't have had to have this surgery. At first it depressed me when I read all these postings about avoiding sugar and fat and carbs in general. I'm thinkin', "Hey, this is not what I thought this would be." I want to be able to eat what I want, only in moderation. I have always been a 'good' eater. I like good-for-you foods. I just like TOO much good foods. I was a HUGE eater. I love the idea I physically will not be able to tolerate too much of ANYTHING again. Example: On Christmas Day I had my first homebaked oatmeal cookie. It took me twenty minutes to eat half of it and I enjoyed every slow, well chewed bite. I was SO satisified and did not desire to have more. This is what I expected and wanted..moderation NOT deprevation.

Guilty...guilty...guilty...you caught me. I still have a ton of bad habits. My two worst enemies are Pepsi and Swedish Fish. I drink Pepsi EVERYDAY. Less than 2 ounces, but I still drink it everyday. Worse yet, I drink it when I eat lunch (I know that is a big no no). I guess it is better than the 2 liters of Pepsi I used to drink everyday. Now with the swedish fish, I don't eat those daily, but I eat them at least once a week. I have lost 96 pounds and had my surgery 5 1/2 months ago. My goal is 158 pounds and I am currently at 164 and in a size 10. I keep saying that I am going to give up my treats, but I haven't yet. The weight is just coming off...I do get in all of my water and I exercise regularly so I guess that helps fight my little munchies...I'm not sure. I think if the weight stopped coming off, I might be a little more inclined to behave. I know I will eventually have to give it up, but its hard, especially since I don't dump at all. I do feel better after this little confession. Best of luck to all.

I am 2.5 weeks post-op, and I've nibbled a few animal crackers. I just needed something sweet. Ok, I didn't NEED it, I WANTED it. I didn't dump, unfortunately, or I'd never go near them again. I took one sip of a diet pepsi yesterday, and it just didn't taste as good as water. How weird is THAT??? I think that as long as a nibble doesn't turn into the entire bag, I'm ok. Everything in moderation.

Hey there, Yes, I also induldge in the "party in the mouth" foods... and I'm sure I always will...the thing is, "now", I only want a "sample" of what I used to eat!! I did not have this surgery with the idea of never being able to eat again... I had this surgery with the idea of becoming what I would call a "normal" eater, and that also can vary from person to person. I do stay away from the "liquid" sugars because I have found them to not be user friendly.... lol, but I will have a hand ful of Buggles or Cheetos if I want them, or maybe 5 Tostitos with cheese melted on them, or maybe a couple of my favorite cookies. I do drink a lot of water per day and get my protien in...but this is not going to be a "diet" for me...this is going to be a "better choice" in my eating habits!! And I am doing that, in moderation. I don't give up what I love, I'm simply "downsizing"...and thanks to WLS, that has not been a hard thing to do at all! I'm sooo glad I had this done! Oh yeah, I am 5 weeks post-op and down 30 pounds!!! YeeHaw! Love and light,

I'm 8 yrs out. I wouldn't knkow about dumping if I hadn't crossed the sugar line. It isn't the one tiny bit of wedding cake that hurts (how many weddings does one attend in a year?), but the daily sugar that costs. It's cost me weight gain TWICE now, to have crossed into sugarland. I have to climb back out & start over each time. So, yes, I have done it and yes, I paid the price. I was one of the lucky ones whose fear of regain is stronger than my desire for sugar & was able to reverse the damage before it got out of hand. But what if I cannot the next time?

I'm about six months out... its Christmas time.. yes, I've had some candy.. we have a box of See's chocolates in the house, and I've had an AVERAGE of about 1.5 pieces a day.. eaten in 1/2 at a time... I don't have any guilt about it.. its what I think of as "normal" eating.. what a thin person might eat. Prior to surgery.. I would have had the pound box finished in a day... this morning is DAY 6 that I've had some of it... I think over this Chrsitmas week.. I've still lost a pound.. not sure yet.

hey Rose---I am almost 7 months out--down 79 lbs and though I do not drink any soda I do have some chips or frito's every now and again--lately a bit more than I should but I cannot eat like I used to though sometimes I get scared cos I'll be munching and feel like I'm munching on more than I should but I am losing 1-3 lbs a week and I feel really good. In comparing this me to the me 8 months ago there is a significant difference. The food doesn't control me like it once did---oh it tries but thus far I'm winning! I say if you can control your eating then there is no harm in indulging here and there--just dont go to the point where you're out of control. Hope this helps!

I ate a piece of candy at halloween and at christmas and on occasion will have some frozen yogurt lucky for me i was never a big sweet eatter...my down fall was always beef and stuff like chips and dip. So now i am very carefull about thoose things but i dont deprive my self because i am afraid that if i do i will binge and that would be ten times worse then eatting one or two on occasion. what i do is make sure that the when i do treat my self to them that i choose the best of two evils lol. i eat fat free dip and the WOW chips and only eat a very few. as for the pop drinking i have had a few sips and found that it felt really realy weird to me. o and so far theese treats have not hurt me i am down 72 pounds in 3 months

I'm down 109 pounds in 10 1/2 months, and only 6 pounds from goal. I eat carbs daily, but I have to eat protein with them to avoid dumping. I've eaten sweet 5 or 6 times, but in small quantities (e.g., one cookie or 1/2 of a small piece of cheesecake or a danish). When I lost control and ate these things, I dumped in varying degrees. But in all of the cases, I did not WANT to eat any more of the item. And I wasn't tempted to eat sweets for quite a while afterwards. Behavior modification via dumping works!!!

I am eight weeks post op tomorrow, and am still treading lightly in the food department. I have never vomited or dumped, and have had a few bites of a potato chip with dill pickle dip, a spoonful of cherry pie, a bite of pumpkin pie, and a few smarties. I don't drink pop, I was a pepsi addict before surgery, but now I'm too scared to try. I don't eat that stuff on a regular basis, but if I feel like a treat I have a SF/FF fudgesicle or popsicle. You aren't the Food Policewoman by any chance, are you!!? I'm out 2 months and down 53 (started at 265). I could blame my cheating (if that's what you want to call it) on Christmas or PMS but it happened so I'm not beating myself up over it. I figure I can barely eat 1/4 of what I used to and MODERATION is the key..maybe, I guess we'll have to see. I have eaten chocolate...kisses, turtles, M & Ms and have not had any dumping. It just has no affect on me whatsoever. I still lost. The past 2 weeks I've worked overtime (16 - 24 hour days) and really really needed caffiene (excuses, excuses!) and I cannot stand the diet taste...so I found myself at the vending machine buying a Dr. Pepper. I let it sit in ice so it was watered down and it was fine..I did however, burp a lot! But that was just the beginning. I have since had about 3 pops and am trying hard to stop...I was a Pepsi-aholic pre surg and didn't want to be post. I've noticed a slow down in the weight loss since the pops came into play, so I'm sure it makes a difference. I've still lost, I mean who can complain about losing 53 in 2 months?!! Oh - the chips...get real people...how bad can eating 5 lousy chips be!?? Really, who could even eat an entire bag like we all used to?! I couldn't even if I wanted to! Luck to you :o) Trish

Yes on the regular candy and soda. I try not to do the regular soda often but the regular candy is hard to stop. I'm almost 20 months post op and can't seem to lose those last 30 pounds but my weight is not gaining ether. Perhaps my sweet tooth and higher carb intake is doing it. Wish RNY would have stopped my desire for sweets and carbs, but atlas all it does is to keep me from eating alot at one time. I am thankful for that.

I had open RNY on 3/1/02. I started at 326 and I m now at 189. I don't crink regular pop and never have. My famly has the fat gene so I never saw regular pop in the house it is foreign to me. But I do have chocolate and fattening things. I still order dessert with my husnabd and we share. i eat potato chips and whatever. The difference is now I make sure I get all my protein in before I do that, and here is the biggest secret of all, something I could never learn before surgery. You just have a bite, a piece, a taste, a couple of chips. I can have it all, I don't always feel the need to have it now though. I simply just have a taste if I want it!!! I have lost 137 lbs so far.

Gee, I feel like such a putz for not eating sugar and being hyper-serious about staying away from the stuff my first 8 months out. It has taken me 10 months to lose 89 @#&! lbs and I am doing what I am supposed to be doing?!! (Can you get my frustration here?) Anyway, I hit the 9 month mark and suddenly realized, eek, I don't dump anymore!?! Now, I can eat chocolate, which ironically I wasn't a big eater of pre-op, I was the carb queen, not a chocoholic. I have had M&M's and have had Hershey's kisses. Sheesh, I even took tiny bites of a piece of cheesecake. So, what damage did I do? How much did I gain over the holidays? 1 lb, which guess what, was due to my cycle coming up. I have found the only time I crave sweets, chocolate for instance, is when I am about to have my monthly visitor. So, if I can just wrestle that dreaded carb/sugar demon I think I can learn to muddle through during that difficult time. We all have cheated at some point, if you didn't how would you know if you did or didn't dump? I stayed clear of candy for my first 8 months and it is a struggle for me now but I will find a way to stop eating it now. I do NOT want to make this a monthly habit!! BTW, I do dump when I eat mashed potatoes or bread, what is up with that? I should say one thing, I do dump, mildly on sugar, but it is nowhere as bad as it was the first few months out when a bowl of Wisconsin Cheddar from Schlotzsky's deli made me dump so horribly I thought I was going to pass out!

January 3, 2003
I probably eat more "junk" food now than I did when I was 360 lbs. I am 3 yrs 3 months post-op by lap BPD/DS and have been at goal (bmi 23) for 2 years now and my weight never fluctuates more than 3 lbs NO MATTER WHAT I EAT! During my first 6-9 months post-op, I had little desire to eat many of my usual favorites, but chose the DS because I knew, from having dieted (like all of us have) down 100 lbs several times and regained it because I never could live a life on continual deprivation. I did, and continue to eat at least 8 oz of Hershey's chocolate (usually more, 2 - 3 cans of Tab, Milano cookies, potato chips (with onion sour cream dip), cream cheese with wheat thins, sour cream AND butter on baked potato, and whipped cream on any dessert served. The only difference for us DS patients is that I make sure to add high fat content without guilt as it enhances our malabsorption and seems to cause us to malabsorb carbs and sugars too. Of course I always eat lots of protein too: high fat cheeses, tuna salad w mayo, eggs w bacon, sausage, cheese, shrimp scampi, meatballs w mozzarella, etc., etc. Life doesn't get much better.
