Question:
Is it ok to add protein at the end of the day for better percentages?

Hey all -- I'm 6 weeks out, lap RNY, and I've been consistently getting in between 60-80 g. of protein. I've been trying to keep my percentages (protein-carb-fat) at 50-25-25, or thereabouts, but on Thanksgiving, I ended up with closer to 35-35-30. I thought about having a protein shake at the end of the day just so my percentages would be better, but I'd already had about 800 calories (which is at the high end of what I've been eating), so I didn't. This made me curious, though, about whether people who watch their percentages have ever added a protein shake at the end of the day to help the numbers. I hope this question makes sense....thanks!    — Tamara K. (posted on December 2, 2002)

I'm not sure I understood your question but I'll tell you what I do and you can figure if I ans. it correctly. At the end of the day, around 8:00 pm or so, I have 16oz. of skim milk to add protein. I hate protein shakes. And I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. Maybe you should ask your dr. Hope I helped some! Good luck!!

Your question makes perfect sense. I do that all the time. I drink half of a Real Meals in the morning. Then at the end of the day if I haven't had a lot of protein I drink the other half to make it up. The other half a shake only has 148 calories and only has 2 grams of carbs so I don't worry about it. Stay away from protein shakes that are high in calories they are made for skinny people to gain weight.

I add protein drinks to up the protein - or just 2 or 4 ounces of lean meat. HOWEVER - has anyone heard that eating all or mostly all of your protein in a short time - rather than eating protein throughout the day - prevents you from absorbing properly? For example we take in no more than 500G of calcium each time throughout the day as taking it all at once defeats the purpose. Too much protein at one time is stored as fat??? Or did I have a bad dream?
