Question:
3 month blood work
Hi Everyone: I just received my 3 month blood work. I will be speaking to my doctor on Monday, but just wondered if any of you professionals could make sense out of my bloodwork. First of all: The lab tech said she would absolutely not do a lipid profile because I was not fasting (had a protein shake that morning). My doctor never told me to fast. Well, lo and behold they did my lipids which came up at 204 for Cholesterol and 141 for LDL-Cholesterol Calc. The lab tech said these would be skewed because I had eaten. Should I have them retaken when I am fasting? My potassium and B-12 were HIGH. I would think this is fabulous. I was hoping they would not be LOW. Also in my bloodwork my MCV and MCH were low, and my RDW were high. What in the world are these things? I was quite pleased, as cholesterol was 45 points lower than the last time. I also did not fast then, and thyroid and other levels were quite normal. Thanks for your help. Love Grace — Grace H. (posted on November 28, 2002)

hiya grace...the lab tech was right about your lipid panel being skewed.
you should retake it after fasting (nothing to eat or drink after
midnight). i just had mine done and it sucked having my protein drink
waiting in the car while i waited to get my labs done!
as far as questions about lab tests, i use a great website called:
http://labtestsonline.org you just enter the name of the test (the
abbreviation is fine) and you'll get all kinds of good info. you can also
just do a search on yahoo, enter the name with quotes around it, and you
should be able to pull up some info.
good luck!
