My suggestion would be talk to your doctor. All doctors tell you different things my doctor tells me not worry about how many carb but the nutrionist at the hospital says no more than 70. He is the same way about protein he says just make sure you eat it and if you start having hair lose up it but again the nutrionist says 60-70. So ask your doctor what he recommends. Good luck.

Christine- It can be confusing and overwhelming with so many different thoughts on the subject. I personally don't count carbs. I concentrate on getting in my protein, water, and exercise. The carbs I eat seem to be find. If I were to guess, I think I'm around 70-100 grams of carbs. Cheryl lap rny 5.5 months -97lbs

I limit my carbs as well to 20 grams or less a day if I can,I just eat a lot of protein, which consists of cheeses, imitation crab, meats, I also eat lots of raw veggies like califlower, brocolli, celery, cucumbers, radishes, these are all low or no carbs, the cooked veggies I eat are green beans, asparagus, spinach, some corn, but not too much corn,,since it has carbs,if you have to have to have carbs save them for the end of the day!!! that way you won't be eating them all day long!! once you start on carbs it's kind of hard to stop.. post-op 02-27-02 -147 pounds,-96 inches, starting weight 270 pounds current weight 123 pounds

hiya! i was told to get around 100 carbs a day but i don't think i reach that. your body does need carbs just like it needs fats and sugars...check with your doc and see what his suggestion is. i always make sure i've got my protein first and that i get some carbs/fats/sugars in each day. good luck! kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal: 135lbs current: 126lbs

For what it's worth, my doc didn't limit carb intake, but emphasized that I should get at least 60 grams of protein per day and eat protein first. I've been tracking what I eat on fitday.com for a few months now, every day. Turns out I get 90-100 grams of protein per day, and 90-100 grams of carbs per day. I've lost 86 pounds in five 1/2 months and have 20-35 pounds to go to goal (can't decide what to pick as a goal weight, LOL!). It's very hard to find any type of food that is pure protein -- even meats have carbs. Veggies have carbs. Fruits have carbs. It isn't just cereals and breads and potatos and pastas, which I'll admit I eat in very small portions, and usually only if there's room after I've had my protein and veggies. I agree that it helps to avoid the types of carbs that trigger your appetite, since in my case, it was definitely binging on carbs that made me obese in the first place!
On the other hand, personally, I don't believe in avoiding all carbs forever, or even until you reach goal. I think it's probably not nutritionally sound or realistic (please don't pelt me with your uneaten dinner rolls for saying so!). I also don't want to create a class of "Forbidden Foods" in my diet that I might go nuts and binge on later (that's just how I am, not how everybody is, I realize).
I figure that when we're new post-ops, we have several months to re-learn our eating habits with a pouch that doesn't let us binge on anything. I think it's a great opportunity to learn how to say, I've had a bit of mashed potatoes, or mac & cheese, or pizza (or whatever), every now and then, and it's no big whoop. That way, I don't feel a need to sink a wooden stake into every bowl of carbs I see. ;P Just my 2c!

The Atkin's and Sugar buster diets will point out starting at 20g carbs a day (basically a salad at lunch) in order to get into ketosis. After that you slowly increase your carbs not to exceed 60g carbs a day. Actually, it's easy. just cut out sugar, bread, rice, pasta and fruits and starchy veggies. If you eat your meat first then the good veggies it is nearly impossible to eat too many carbs. After you cut the carbs for a few weeks, you stop craving them.

My nutritionist also believes in a balanced diet that includes 40 percent Protein, 30 percent carbs to include fruits and vegetables and 30 percent fat. There are good carbs and bad carbs. the bad carbs convert to sugar, like white flour products (bread, rolls, pasta, cookies, cakes) and good carbs, like beans, crab meat etc. Not to say you can't have the bad carbs, just minimize. Moderation is the key to using your tool to its best advantage.

I don't count non-starch carbs in my 20 to 40 carbs a day. Sure I might lose faster if I did, but I think green veggies are good for me in too many other ways!
