Question:
drainage tube irritating diaphragm and pancreas?

Hi AMOS family. This is Alison R's angel and I need your advice! I posted this to the message board too so hopefully some will be able to help. Alison is experiencing alot of discomfort from her drainage tube on the right side. They said it's irritating her diaphragm and pancreas. She is terrified to have them try to move it again. She wants to be sedated if they do. Anyone else have this happen? Did meds work? Or just removing the tube work? I didn't have a tube on the right side, just on the left. Also she's allergic to morphine. They were giving her vicodin PILLS(sigh) and finally switched her to IV meds. She's terrified and she had to travle from Alaska to California for this surgery so she is separated from her family. Anyone experience this? Any advice?? Thank you!    — LisaTaz (posted on November 11, 2002)

I had a lot of pain at the drainage tube site. My doc took it out at 48 hrs. It really did not hurt a lot coming out and the pain began to ease within 20 minutes of removal. Good luck.

Aloha!!! My surgeon prescribed Toradol for me and that seemed to help. Is the drain a JP drain perhaps?? Mine wasn't painful while in place, but MAN oh MAN did it hurt when they took it out!!!! My advice; have them give her a local injection of lidocaine at the drain site before the pull it. It will help ease some of the discomfort. Tell her BE THE BEST LOSER SHE CAN BE!!!!
