Question:
For those of you who were 150 lbs or more overweight, did you lose all of it?
Exactly what IS goal weight? Is that the weight you've always been told you were supposed to be according to those charts? Or is it what your surgeon set for you, or that you personally desired? My surgeon says that I should realistically expect to lose 60 - 85% of my excess weight. But it seems like many have lost 100%. I currently weigh 297 at 5'7. I hope to get down to 150, but am thinking (pesimisticaly) I'll reach around 180 or even 190. That would royally suck. I mean, it would be better than now, by far, but what in the world would prevent me from losing it all??? Anyway, sorry to go on and on, but those of you who were 150 lbs or more overweight, did you lost ALL of it? Thanks! PS my attentive surgery date is for Dec. 3!!! Five days before my 27th birthday! :) — Toni M. (posted on November 7, 2002)

Toni,
I could care less about any goal weights set by the surgeon or psychologist
or nutritionist. I've set a short-term, intermediate-term and long-term
goal for myself. I started out at 427 on my surgery day (07/17). I now
weigh 321 - down 106 pounds in a little over 3 and a half months.
<p>
My short-term goal is to get below 300 pounds. My intermediate-term goal
is to get to 213 pounds (which would be 214 pounds lost). My long-term
goal is to get below 200 - even if it's only 199...JR

I started out at 282, I now weigh 127. I've lost 105% and feel GREAT. I
have a very small frame, so the doc says my weight loss is fine.

Hi! I am also 5"7" and started @ 272 I have now lost 98 pounds,
my goal is 140pds. But I will probably go below this according to the
charts I should weigh 123-130. But at 170 I look like I weigh around 130.
So it all depends on your frame. But yes you can loose that much. Good luck
on your upcoming surgery. Tonjia

Hi there, I started at 282 and am 5'2.5". So I'm a shorty. I am 15
months post op and have lost close to 140 so far. I would like to loose
another 10-20 lbs. I have reached my surgeons goal for me and medically I
am fine. I personally want to be a thin person, now that I've come so far.
So I continue to strive for a lower weight. It has slowed down, but it is
still coming off. Honestly it is easier for me to "diet" now that
I don't have the massive hunger and cravings constantly sabatoging my
weightloss attempts. I am confident that I can loose at least 10 more...20
more may be a bit difficult for me to maintain even at 5'2.5...that would
put me at 125. I think I skipped over that weight at some point in puberty.
I will take this surgery as far down the scales as it will allow me to go.
When you talk about pessamistic(sp) expectations, as a post-op
contemplating surgery, I thought I'd bottem out at around 165 or so. That
is a weight I maintained a long time in highschool/early 20's. So, you see
I've done a bit better than that, and have become rather optimistic that I
will be smaller yet. RNY is awesome!! Good luck and God bless! -Kim open

Well I'm 23, and 5'7" or 5'8"...my first consult with a surgeon
said I should be 130..WRONG. My surgeon said 150-165, which I think is more
realistic. I started at 390 and now weight around 240. That's 150
down...another 65-70 to go and I'm only 10 months out now. :) Good luck!

At 5'6", the charts say I should be 142. uh huh. My original goal
was to get to 168 (only 5 pounds to go to get there!). I have reduced my
goal weight to 157, I thought it would be nice to be exactly half the
person I started out as at 314. I am just shy of nine months though, and
have already lost 141, putting me at 173 today. I am continuing to lose
fairly well, this far out still shedding about ten pounds month. I keep
thinking anyday it's just going to stop - but sometimes, I actually start
to think "I may get down to that 142, whether I want to or not".
Which I don't really want to be. But I still have nine months of this
window left. Who knows. Frankly, I am in desperate need of plastic
surgery - TT, lower body lift, and boobs. Other than the PS though, if I
don't lose another pound...I'd be content with my weight loss. And, I
think ulitmately that's it. If you are healthy, feel good about yourself
and are finally comfortable in your own skin, then you've done alright.
Good luck!

I lost exactly 150# 8 yrs ago. I had a good surgery & a good post-op
plan I could live with. According to the chart at the time, my goal was
125#. That was also my personal goal, as that's as small as I could
rememmber being. Some charts do 100# at 5, and 5# for every inch
thereafter. At 5'1" & 110-115, I'm chubby by those stds. The
chart I saw was 122-129 for my ht, and I'm lower. Go figure. This size fits
me, and I'm thrilled to maintain it. I call it 100%, but it'd be more than
100% by one measure, less than by the other. Statisically, with my very,
very distal procedure, I should be able to maintain 89% at 5 yrs. I'm
guessing some of us maintain more, some of us aintain less and that gives
that average. I pretty much stick to the original formula, and I do
whatever head games it takes to keep me to it. I like it here, and since
I'm technically sposta regain a few more lbs, I DO NOT WANT TO. If they
jump on me, it is NOT going to be with my help! All I can say is that I
had a good formula. Good surgery, done right + good post-op plan.

I am a new post-op (only 6 weeks) but my realistic goal is to be in a size
12 regardless of my weight. I am a large frame so I know I will never be
in a 8 or anything like that. My surgeon says I should weight something
like 145. My "it would be great" goal is if I could wear an 8 or
10 but like I said I will settle for a 12. I have lost 34# so far.

I weighed 287 and I am 5'7" when I started this journey. Tomorrow I
will be at my 7 month anniversary. I am currently at 183 and hoping to get
down to 150. Since I still have about a year of opportunity and 33lbs to
goal I feel that this should not be a problem. However from here on out
I'm sure I will have to work very hard for every pound I take off. The good
part of this is I am in a size 12 and medium-large tops. I don't remember
wearing this size when I weighed this before. But people guess me at
140-150 now so even though you may weigh more you don't look as if you
do.Best of luck to you and congratulations on starting your journey this
year. RK

Hey, I am not done yet but I am getting there. I started at 320, and my
ideal weight is 140, but doc wanted me at 160. Well here I am at 7.5
months post op and I am down to 173 already! In less than 8 months I have
lost 147 lbs. I am very confident that I will succeed in hitting my sretch
goal of 140, and that is without any surgeries to remove excess skin or
anything. Loosing over 150lbs is definetely a possibility. I wanted to
loose 160 by December, and I have only 13lbs to go to do that!! And that
was really pushing it!

I wanted to lose 100 and have lost 140 - 9 months post -up. I could still
stand to lose another 20 but I would have considered 100 successful. Don't
aim too high and disappoint yourself although I'm sure you will make it.
Take it small amounts at a time. Good luck to you. Surgery was the best
thing I could have ever done.
