Question:
Okay I have a question.
I know that everyone is different and some lose quicker then others, but my question is. How many of you eat what you want (of course small portions) I mean anything you want down to chips. or candy, etc Im not saying eating tons of it just a nibble here or a nibble there. How many of you eat what you want and are losing? I know we are to stay away from sugar etc, but I think there are more people who still snack a little but due to others may not want to admit it. (you know the negative comments like" why would you want chips, or a piece of candy". Some would say because we are normal. Guess I sound bitter dont mean to but if you dont have something nice to say or a nice way to say things maybe its better left unsaid. So how many of you have eaten even bad things but still lose. — Schatzie1 (posted on November 7, 2002)

Rose,
I had my RNY 1/07/02 and am down 75lbs. I have 20-25 more to go and I can
eat anything. I am not really a chip eater but I do eat them sometimes. I
still love sugar and candy, that is my downfall. I don't dump at all. I
wish I did sometimes. I am still losing and my doctor said as long as I
keep losing I am fine. It's not that I eat candy all the time but I do eat
it. I still watch what I eat and I don't overeat. I went for bloodwork
before my 9month checkup and everything was perfect. Believe it or not my
B12 was way too high and I only have been takin it sublingul, I was told to
only take it 3 times a week. I hope I helped by telling you the truth.

I have a No Sugar Added Icecram Bar about 3 times a week. I have Sugar
Free Russell Stover chocolate candy (little bite size pieces) several a day
and I have Goldfish crackers (about 15) with my lunch every day. I will be
6 months post op on 11/13/02 and I am down about 95 pounds.

Rose,
I was craving FUNYUNS big time on election day. I got me some funyuns and
ate em up. It was GREAT! I love funyuns so I got some. We didnt go thru
this surgery to help us lose weight, just to restrict ourselves again. We
couldnt do it before or we would have stuck to the hundreds of diets we
tried. I say live it up girlfriend! You are doing great! By the way, I have
lost 63 pounds as of the 3rd week in October, I dont know what my total is
now, and my surgery was 9/3/02. I eat when I get a craving, but only when I
crave, which isnt often. I say go for it. Just dont let it control you!

Rose, first let me preface this by saying, I don't want to be fat again,
so, I am not eating any sweets. However, I do eat what I want. I eat ice
cream (Breyers No Sugar Added) and last night, I had a whole slice of
Pepperoni Pizza, crust & all. It was delicious. I even lost 1/2 lb
yesterday! I did this to be normal again, not to diet forever. But, keep
in mind, I was never a sweet eater pre-op, you would never see me eating
cookies, cakes, candy etc...I was a meat & potatoes and bread girl.
So, a cookie or peice of cake to someone else, was a peice of bread to me.
And, yes, I have had some bread, just in MAJOR moderation.

Well, I'm of the opinion that anyt ishing fine in MODERATION. I'm 8 months
post op and couldn't be happier. I focus primarily on high lean protein,
low carb, low fat diet. I will eat the occassional chip and candy if I
feel like it, if I feel like having a SIP of soda, I will, that's pretty
much how I feel about any food. I want to feel as normal as possible and
I'm not willing to deprive myself of anything. To me, the key to success
is being able to monitor when, what and how much you eat. I know that if I
eat a whole candy bar...I'll probably get sick, but if I eat a mini snack
size piece of chocolate, I'm fine. I know that I can't eat a whole
hamburger...but what's wrong with taking a bite of one, then dumping the
bun and eating the patty? I know that I can't eat a whole piece of cake,
but will a bite kill me? Hey, McDonald's Fries are my FAVORITE, so what if
I can't eat a super size order, I can still have 6-7 of them w/out the
guilt. At this point,I've been give this wonderful gift and I'm doing what
I can to make it work for me...and this is what works for ME. We're all
different and that's the beauty of it!

I had open RnY on 9/18/02 (7 weeks yesterday), down 32 lbs. I pretty much
eat what I want. I have had chips, pretzels, pizza, blooming onions,
cheetos, peanut butter cookies, regular Dr. Pepper, french fries, nachos.
You name it I probably tried it. No problems so far. Of course, I try all
this in moderation. A bite or two and I am satisfied. I knew the only way
my new pouch and I could work together was if I kept my life as normal as
possible. So far so good. I take my vitamins, drink my water, eat my
protein and try to get exercise in. So if I want a snack once in a while
that is my privledge. The purists will probably take me to task for eating
like that. But that's OK. To each her own and more power to however you
choose to deal with your body!

I eat just about anything I want in small portions and that includes lots
of snacks, to include small amounts of mini-cookies and candy. I don't
consider anything "bad", as that is a mindset I used to have when
I was obese. There are good choices that should be made all the time and
not so good choices that can be made some of the time. Its called balance
and moderation. I do try to make healthy choices most of the time for main
meals, though, and ensure that I get in enough protein, and keep sucking
down the water all day. And I continue to lose, though slowly, and am 20
or less from goal. I think the first year, most of us can continue to eat
small amounts of things here and there and continue to lose weight. What I
worry about is further down the road and whether we can MAINTAIN while
continuing to indulge. Many will say that we need to learn good eating
habits early on as they will help to guide the tool further down the road,
and I do believe that to be true. I go back to balance and moderation.
Its what "normal" and "thin" people do. If they
indulge too much and gain a few pounds, they cut out deserts for a week and
add some exercise and its taken care of. I hope that is how the rest of my
life will be.

Yup, count me in...I eat just about anything I want, I still lost 120
lbs...I'm at goal (actually below goal) and feel great!!! I had this
sugery to be "normal", whatever that is...and I eat just about
whatever I want, in small amounts, and I've lost...been maintaining this
weight that I'm at...went from a size 24 to a size 2/4---guess it worked
for me. Have a Sparkling Day!! ~CAE~

I eat normal foods. Fast food, chips, whatever. Fats won't make me fat
again. BUT if I get snuggling up with sugar, even small amounts, my
clothes are tight and I mean fast. Sugar will put me back to my start
weight in short order if I let down the guard there. Please note that I
know what happens. What does that tell you? However, I avoid milk utterly
& completely. I also avoid incidental sugars by reading labels. No
sugar added doesn't fool me. If I eat sugar, it is deliberate &
planned, with complete guilt & all, like frosting. But I do dump, glad
of it. It's those tiny bits that chunk me up again if I let it go past a
serving every few months. I am not a snacker, however. But if I want
chips & cottage cheese, that is one of my 4 allotted feedings. If I
have a sandwich, a few chips go WITH the sandwich. I would not be likely
to have my 4 feedings AND grab some chips. But that's not will power or
anything. Never was a snacker. I'm a volume eater.

I eat completely normal. Everything that I did pre-op just in smaller
portions. I have to admit I have had a couple of pieces of Halloween candy
each day for the past week. I am five months post op and at goal. My
doctor has even told me not to try and lose any more weight.

I'm 15 months out. 105% weight lost. 282 to 127. Stable, holding, and NOT
DIETING. Since day 1, I eat whatever I want IN MODERATION. I have only 2
rules, get protien in first to make sure my muscles continue to work well,
make sure all vitamins and calcium are taken every single day. My labs are
great, I feel better than I did at age 20 and I have no guilt, no dieting
mind-set, and food is no longer an issue in my life. As Martha would say
"it's a good thing."

hiya. it bugs me when ppl freak out over eating some candy or chips -- like
someone else said, i didn't have this surgery to live on a restricted diet
- i had it to save my life and eat like a "normal" person. i am
almost 17 mos post op, eat whatever i want, refuse to feel
"guilty" over eating sugar/fats/chips, and am below my goal
weight - while being super healthy.
pre op i thought, "oh wow i'm never gonna be able to eat pizza again,
i don't think i can do that!" but i met a lady that had gone from size
32 to size 4 and she said, "hey i eat pizza, just one slice instead of
the whole thing" and ya know what? that's me now! i generally center
my meals around protein, i drink coffee with added whey and soy protein
powder, take all my vitamins/iron/calcium so when i had one day when i was
feeling kinda down and wanted to eat doritos and ice cream (only!) i
allowed myself. know what? by that afternoon my body was saying,
"WOMAN give me a steak!" lol...
everything in moderation is the key. exercise. take your vitamins. make
sure you get your protein. drink lots of water. don't sweat the small
stuff.

Hey Rose--I agree with everyone so far. We know where we're coming from
and this shouldn't be a "diet". I say have at it! I tried an
ice cream cone from Dairy queen yesterday--I didn't keep it down but I
still thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm down 71.5 lbs since 6/4/02 and feeling
great! I try to get my protein and water in and I avoid soda completely
but should I want a soda--I will have a bit. I just wanna live be healthy
happy and not feel out of place! Good luck & God Bless!!!!

It's nice to read thru these answers and not see overzealous AMOS members
chiding you for even mentioning chips in your question. I am one of those
who as not denied myself much since surgery, nor have I exercised to speak
of. Now, the good news is that I don't crave/want much, and I am down
70lbs in 7 months. The bad news is that it took me 3 months to lose 50lbs,
and four to lose the last 20, and I am sure that my less than diligent
attitude has played a part in that. Sometimes I get scared that I will be
stuck here (with another 40lbs. or so to lose) so I have been making some
efforts to actually "diet" recently, and I plan to join Weight
Watchers soon. I figure I can use some "controls" for water,
exercise, healthier food choices, etc. in place. Anyway, my point is that
I would never want to live my life in fear of the occasional potato chip,
cookie, candy bar, etc., but the payback is that I may never reach my
personal goal. Kinda depressing when you think about it...

Hello...You are not alone. I am 7 months post op on Nov. 12th. I have
lost 72lbs. I don't snack on junk nor do I deprive myself of cravings. I
eat what I want at that moment. I have not excersiced once since my
surgery. No, I am not real proud of that however; you are not alone. I
think that we are pretty much right on path with our weight loss. I only
have 22 lbs to go to be at my goal weight and yes, it will probably go a
bit quicker if I would not have those few chips that I crave and add some
excersice to my weekly routine, but why? I am happy with what I am doing
and it is working. I will however begin excersicing soon. My husband is 9
weeks post-op on Nov. 16th and he has dropped a whopping 63lbs. There are
reasons like he weighed 389 day of surgery and he is male. He has a lot
more to lose than I, and men just over all lose weight faster. Hang in
there, you are doing fine.

Hi, I think the reason almost all of us had this surgery is that we have
food issues and they are not going away, I eat what I want and exercise in
moderation...this tool has helped me loose 105 lbs in 8 months...I just do
my best and it does include chips and snacks and candy on occasion but
that's normal and I'm not going to beat myself up about food ever again,
and that's the best thing that came out of this surgery.
