Question:
I have just been diagnosed with myeloproliferative disease.
I have "essential thrombocystitis", not the leukemia type. Has anyone had this blood disorder (i.e., bone marrow constantly makes too much white blood cells and platelets), and has gone through wls?? What about the risk of developing blood clots? Please, someone answer. This is the 2nd time Im trying to post this question. — Tammy M. (posted on November 4, 2002)

Hi Tammy, SOrry you are going throhg this. Unfortunately, I do not have any
answers for you, I just wanted to make sure you did not think we were not
reading. I think this falls into one of those "you have to talk to
your doctor and trust his experience" type of answers. Hopefully you
are seeing a hemotologist that can work with your surgeon through this
whole process and make sure that you have the best outcome possible. Good
Luck to you!

Tammy, I too have "myeloproliferative syndrome". My white cell
count fluctuates between 14,000-17,000 and my platelet count is usually
high 400's or low 500's (although its been as high as low 600's). I
haven't had WLS, but I've had numerous plastic surgeries. Its never been a
problem for me with any of my surgeries, although I understand that the
high platelet count can put you at higher risk for blood clots, depending
on how high your count is. Make sure both your weight loss surgeon and
your hematologist know about it. Best of Luck to you with your weight loss
journey.
