Question:
Does anyone have suggestion for pain killers?
A few years ago, I broke both ankles, I had the Morphine pump after surgery, and later vicodine. I had severe vomiting. I've found Percoset makes me extremely itchy and restless and also stomch upset, so does Codeine and Darvocet.. The only thing I dread about the upcoming surgery are the painkillers.. I will bring it up with the surgeon, but was wondering if anyone else found a pain killer that worked for them that may have the same sensitivity. I don't want to be vomiting after this surgery or experience terrible dry heaves... — cheri123 (posted on October 20, 2002)

Taffy-I have a morphine allergy--they can also use Demerol in the pump.
Additionally, there are synthetic pain killers out there often used for
those with multiple sensitivities to the opiate derived ones or those
individuals who have opiate addiction in the past, and are now
rehabbed--not wanting to awaken the "demon". Hope this
helps--Good Luck--

I would also recommend talking to the anesthesiologist about your concerns.
This is the doctor that actually prescribes your pain medications. Good
luck on your surgery!!

When I was in the hospital, they gave me morphine injections only when I
needed them. I did not have a pump and it was just fine. I had a LAP RNY
on 8/15. They gave me percoset coming home, but I was allergic to it,
which kind of aggrevated me because I tol dhim I was allergic to codeine
too. They gave me meperagan fortis but it caused such leg cramps that by
then I really didn't need it. Tylenol would handle any discomfort I had by
then.

Hi Taffy believe me I can sympathies with you. I had open RNY on 10/19. I
am very sensitive to anesthesia and pain meds. I had to have multiple
anti-emetics given to me to combat the nausea. When I was put on the
Morphine pump it made me extremely sick with dry heaves. The surgeon
switched me to Demerol which wasn't any better. I asked to be taken off
that after a day. They gave me liquid Lortab which still made me sick. So
the moral of the story is I went without any pain meds after 3 days post
op. Boy was it ruff but I never had to throw up. I even asked the Dr. if
I could have another pain med once I was released and he said there weren't
any that he could prescribe in liquid so I had to tuff it out. He did
however say that I could take as much liquid Tylenol as possible. Wendi

Taffy...My surgeon always gives an epidural for the entire hospital stay,
which blocks the pain to the area. However, my hands & fingers started
going numb from too much meds in the epidural, so it had to be taken out.
I have had numerous problems with pain killers in the past, but my surgeon
ordered dilaudid (EP'S drug of choice!) & I had absolutely no problems
with it. Good luck...

Thank you all so much for your responses. I will ask my surgeon about an
epidural! Never had one of those but I'd rather have numb fingers then the
dry heaves, etc anytime! Great action! Thank you! Taffy
