Question:
17 Days Post op with DRYEST SKIN EVER
Has anyone experienced this? I never had dandruff before, now I have it bad, plus my skin is so dry and flaky everywhere especially my face I have been peeling and brushing off my clothes. It's kinda gross. If you had this, what did you do to minimize? Are there good lotions out there? I was expecting hair loss, not skin loss???? — Ruby S. (posted on October 5, 2002)

I had the same problem when I was a new postie. Your not getting in enough
fluids. If water is hard try diet snapple or 1% milk. Make sure that you
drink something every hour.

You are dehydrated!! Only fix for that is drinking as many fluids as you
can get in. It's hard, I know, but you have to do it. I'm 17 days out
also and I always have either a bottle of water or a glass of Crystal Lite
with me all the time. Hope this helps!!

For the topical treatment, my dermatologist recommends "Nutraderm
30". It's a very light weight but highly effective lotion. I've seen
it at Target, or ask your pharmacist to order you some (over the counter).
For your face, my personal favorite is Aveda moisturizer for dry skin with
Tourmaline. It's a little pricey, but works like none other.

I agree with the previous posters. You need to drink more. And I too had
the same thing happen to me until just recently. I am now almost 10 weeks
out and have made a concious effort to drink more water throughout the day.
Not to mention I found a great lotion too. It's not too expensive either.
It was in the baby section of our local Kmart store and called Aveeno
Calming Comfort Baby Lotion. It has a nice smell too a combination of
lavendar and vanilla. Hope that helps.

I think it also has to do with the fact that you are not eating near as
much fatty foods as before. I know that I had a serious issue with dry
skin as a recent postie, it went away rather quickly. I also have noticed
my hair being much drier. <and curly now too, but thats another
story> Im a year post op now and the dry skin went away, but the hair
has yet to recover. I underwent basically a second RNY last week and the
dry skin is back. It started when I was still in the hospital, still
hooked up to the niagra falls IV. I'm sure it has something to do with
water intake....but I have a hard time beliving it is that alone. That is
why I feel that it also has to do with your change in diet. No fear..it
goes away...and fairly quickly too.

You need LOTS of water and some daily fat.
