Question:
I have a WATER question.

I am 5 months post-op and have lost 70 lbs. However, I have been on a plateau for the past month. I know that I have to increase the protein which I am doing now and I have joined Curves for Women to get more exercise. The only thing I am having some problems with is the water. I'm just having trouble drinking enough water. I get involved in what I'm doing and just forget to drink. I always have a bottle of water sitting on my desk but it is usually still half full by the time I leave work. My question is this: Anyone have any suggestions to get me to drink more water. any tricks or tips. Thanks    — Peggy D. (posted on September 11, 2002)

May I suggest a favorite flavor of YOUR choice? Example, I love to squeese some fresh lemon in water then add Splenda. Be creative and you'll find something that will make that water taste like a million bucks. ;)

What i did was i found a water bottle thats holds 32oz. i make sure i have that gone by about 3pm then i am half there. lipton tea also makes a decaff lemon and honey tea, add a little equal or what ever and it goes very quickly. sam's carries a flavored water put out by very nice juice company that is very good. walmart also has flavored water it carboniated though. i was at time tempted to get the hard hat that hold the 2 beer cans and a straw that goes into your mouth. I figured I could be the laughing stock of the neighborhood.

I don't think it is an issues that you don't like the taste of water, is it? I think what you are trying to get across is that you actually FORGET to drink. Am I correct? I have the same problem and I really have to watch things. I have to really focus and if I have to put the water in my face, I will. I keep a 30 ounce cup with me and I sip on it throughout the day. However, I rarely get through it because I forget. I have found that I even set a little alarm to remind me to drink. After my meal, I have to wait 30-60 minutes and I always wait a couple of hours and then remember to drink. You might try setting a little kitchen alarm or something for 30-60 minutes and then remembering to drink after it goes off. Hope this helps a little.

I had the same problem with forgetting to drink my water. Now I have found that if I drink it in the car on my way somewhere I will get it done. For example, I live about 25 minutes away from work and about 15 min in the oppisite direction from my daughters school. I take 2 bottles of water (17oz each) and drink one on the way to my daughters school, and the other on the way to work. I then do the same thing on the way home. It doesn't fall in with mealtimes so I get all my water in while I drive and don't have to remember the rest of the day. I do try to drink at least one more bottle of water sometime during the day, but if I dont finish - at least I got my 64+oz in a day.

I'm still on the pre-op side but I find the only thing that helps me to remember to drink that much water is to keep a food journal. But I don't like to do that, either. :o) Also, I am like a couple of the previous people, that if I drink that much water I like to vary the taste.

Hi there...I too have difficulty remembering to drink, so I set "curfews" if you will to get my water in. I make sure I have my first liter of water (or Crystal Light) gone by noon, then I have until bedtime to get in the second liter of water. It does help if it's an exercise day because I am thirsty afterward, so then I surpass my 2 liters a day. Drinking Crystal Light or Sugar-Free Kool Aid really makes getting the water in that much easier. I get bored by drinking plain water sometimes, so thank goodness for Crystal Light or S/F Kool Aid! Good Luck to you!

I find that I drink flavored beverages more quickly than just plain water. I make herb teas, the Bigelow teas actually seep into cold water and the others may also. So I sweeten mine with a little saccharin and find that I do easily manage to get my quota in. Good luck.

I have found that I can get in all of my water if I drink Propel Fitness water by Gatorade. I love the Black Cherry. Good Luck~ Candi

I had the same problem - don't have it anymore - what cured me you ask? 1) I got dehydrated and got a killer of a bladder infection - which meant a trip to the Dr. for antibiotics, and lots of painful peeing for days! That was enough for me to get serious about the water - I know the dehydration caused it because it happened to me pre-op before and bladder infections run in my family (for the women, anyway). So..... 2) I started punishing myself by not going to bed until I have had at least 60-66 oz in every day - If I only got 20 oz in at work, that is at least 40 I have to get in before I can go to sleep at night. The first few times it hit 9pm and I was starting to get sleepy but had 30 more oz to go, I learned my lesson. Since I simply cannot function without sleep, it only took a few late nights of staying up to drink, then getting up twice to pee, to cure me of that disease. Adding flavor like the other posters said helped - and so did altering the type of container I am drinking out of. Good Luck!

WOW, thanks for all the great ideas. I have a 50 minute drive to work so I will drink water instead of coffee. I don't care for the flavored water. I DO like the taste of water (if there actually is a taste anyway. lol). I think I'm gonna do the 32 oz before lunch and then 32 before supper and whatever I drink between supper and bedtime is "gravy". Thanks everyone. Great response to my question!

What kind of water are you drinking? I found I was not very fond of tap water "after surgery." I started Drinking Dassani bottled water, and It tastes so good to me I drink lots of it with no problem.

I'm pre-op and I've always loved water, but I always like to get in as much as possible early in the day. I've found that by using a straw that you don't usually realize how much you are drinking. I can drink 3-4 glasses at a meal as long as I have a straw. Otherwise, I would probably just have one glass. So go get some straws and give it a try. Can't hurt. Good Luck!
