Question:
I'm 4 mos. post-op RNY. My hair is falling out. Is it okay to get highlights?
I am a little over 4 months post-op RNY & my hair is falling out. I had a lot of hair to begin with so it doesn't look that bad but it is still traumatic!! People tease me & say you could have stood to lose some hair anyhow. Anyways, I wanted to get my hair highlighted. Is that okay to do? Will it make my hair fall out even more? Also is there anything I can do to slow it down? Will it ever regrow? I am taking my vitamins daily. — Allison T. (posted on August 27, 2002)

Most importantly, yes, the hair falling out will stop. Right around the
4-5 month period is when mine began. I would suggest waiting until after
your hair has stopped falling out to get it highlighted. I am 10 months
post-op and color/highlight my hair now regularly with no problem. Maybe
even call your salon and ask what they think!

Hi Allison... I am 4.5 months post op and have been losing hair a little
over a month. I had mine cut to take the stress off of it and it has
slowed a little. To help it though: up your protein; folic acid and zinc
are the two elements to add. I also use Vioxin products which are
specifically for hair loss & hair damage. I see little whispies so it
is coming in even as I lose it. I'm told we won't go bald just thinner
then it comes back even more. I was told by my hairdresseer: DO NOT
color, highlight, perm or anything until about 8 months or until it has
stopped coming out. My best to you.

I am 4 months post-op and I have been coloring my hair regularly
(every 4 weeks or so) since surgery and have had no problems.
The hair loss we are experiencing now (yes I am losing it too) is
going to happen whether we color our hair or not. I has to do
with what is going on inside our bodies.

I, too, started losing my hair between months 4 and 5. At first, it wasn't
too bad. Now, it is really coming out. I have some patches where the
scalp is showing! My doc says the average range for hair loss occurs and
regrowth occurs anywhere between the third and ninth months - with the
process lasting about 3 months. I was coloring my hair before it starting
coming out, but have since stopped altogether. My sister, a cosmetologist,
says it is best not to stress it any further by coloring, perming, etc.

Between about 3-6 months post-op, I had quite a bit of hair loss. I also
have a lot of hair, so other people did not really notice, but I did. I
color and highlight my hair, and continued to do so even through the hair
loss. The hair color & highlighting is on the hair that has already
grown out. The hair loss is caused by internal changes. I won't presume
to tell you what to do, but it did not hurt me, and I felt better knowing
that my hair looked good at least. Brenda

i don't think it matter's if you color/highlight your hair it's already
dead from the time it pokes out of your scalp. i don't think it'll make a
differance to your hair.

I had an AWESOME beautician that I really trusted. When I was having a LOT
of hair loss due to health reasons she told me NOT to perm or dye my hair.
She felt that if I really wanted a color boost for my hair that
professional highlighting was the safest option for my hair.
