Question:
Anyone there been approved for wls without the blessing of a psych.?
Hi, has anyone out there been approved for weight loss surgery regardless of the outcome of your psychological evaluation? The Dr. said she doesn't think I am mentally ready for it. This is a huge drawback because I feel I am ready. All the information the insurance needs will be faxed to them soon (letter from PCP, nutritional and psych. evals.) — blank first name B. Last nites support group meeting had our psych doc talking about rejections
for surgery. He said less than 1% are turned down, these are active
alacholics, drug addicts, those trying to commit suicide by having surgery,
or those with multi personalties like hannibal lecter. The meetings are now
on the internet and they are supposed to be rerun, so you could watch it
for info.

I didnt have a psyc eval. NOT all doctors require them. Its a guideline
from the American Bariatric association. I had BCBS they did not have a
psyc requirement either. Check your insurance company.

Quick! DO NOT LET YOUR CURRENT PSYCH FAX HER EVALUATION TO THE INS
CO...Run, don't walk, to another psychiatrist, preferably one recommended
by your WLS doc. I ran into the same thing, and was not about to let a
horrible psych who knew me for all of 45 minutes blow my chances for this
surgery. It may seem dishonest to do this, but we all have a right to a
second opionion, right? And the ins. co. never need know about the first
opinion, right? Good luck.
