Question:
2 Difficult Pregnancies while MO Resulted in Tubal. Any Post-Op RNY Options?
I gained the majority of my weight with two pregnancies in 3 years. Both pregnancies were very difficult - gestational diabetes, toxemia, high bp. My last child was 9 lbs 14 oz, nearly 4 weeks early. I was hospitalized for three days prior to her birth due to the toxemia. Because the pregnancies were so difficult and dangerous, my ob/gyn insisted on a tubal since the problems get worse with subsequent pregnancies. He told me all the problems were related to morbid obesity.

Now that I am healthy, do I have any options to get pregnant now? A reversal of the tubal, in vitro? I know my ob/gyn would have to clear it and I will need to address these questions to him, but if anyone here has any knowledge or experience, I'd appreciate you sharing it with me. — [Deactivated Member] (posted on July 19, 2002)

With either my second or third child, I asked the OB GYN about getting my
tubes tied during the c-section, vs. my husband getting snipped. My
specific concern was what if we change our minds? This was a few years
ago, but I remember him telling me that a tubal person can get pregnant
easily enough with medical intervention -- vasectomies are not as
statistically successful at reversal. He said the method of intervention
would depend on how many kids we wanted. If we wanted just one, for
example, he would extract an egg from upstream from the tubal site and do
an in vitro implantation. This would be less invasive and cheaper than a
tubal reversal... unless you wanted to have say 3 or more. Then the 5 to 7
K it would take to do a reversal would end up being cheaper than that many
in vitros. Not clear on success rates, but I remember being VERY relieved
at the information I was getting. At least call and talk to someone, so
you know all options. We ended up having a third, trying for four months
for a fourth and then realizing that God had granted us the gift of
thinking through it some more, we opted for scissors for the hubby.
