Question:
Can you still lose weight if your revised but the stoma is left at a size 20?
I am looking for information regarding post-op success or failures afer a revision. I am scheduled to have my pouch smaller and transected. My intestines reconnected to a distal RNY. However, the stoma size of 20 will be left in tact due to the severity of the surgery to reconstruct it. Is it still possible to successfully lose the weight leaving the stoma that large but revising everything else? — J B. (posted on July 2, 2002)

I've read something about anything higher than 18 being considered
ineffective. It's fuzzy in my head, but you might want to check
www.asbs.org and see if you can find this article.

Leaving a stoma size of 20 there is NO reason to have your ouch made
smaller.... It would be 'useless' my stoma is 'to big' its within the
normal size range but to big for my body (size 8 - 12) the Upper GI test
showed no pouch use... so why bother? if your "heavy" the
'distal' part will work for weight loss... but not long term maintainence.
When I realized I had this problem; I tried to do research; you will find
the majority of surgeons will NOT fix this problem due to 'failure' rate in
the past...I have found a surgeon that will put the Fobi ring on me when he
fixes my hernia; hopefully this will work; otherwise. if you are dealing
with a large stoma (which lets you eat) you will have to work on your
'eating' issues big time.
