Question:
Does anyone have bladder spasms post op after UTI?

Before my surgery I had a UTI. It was resolved using Cipro...but by the end of my Rx, I was in pain - although the infection was gone. Felt like my urethra was torn up when I peed. After I was cathed in surgery (6/5/02) I was again put on Cipro for a UTI. Same thing...although now, its been more then a week and I seem to get bladder spasms or soemthing. Seems worse when I dont get my water in and seems worst AFTER I empty my bladder. I am terrified of having to have another procedure like a Cystoscopy... can anyone help me to diagnosis whats going on and/or let me know if this happened to you and if it will go away on it's own? Thanks in advance!    — Kym L. (posted on June 27, 2002)

I don't know if this is the same thing...but after surgery, I got aUTI....then I thought I got another one after the first one cleared up....but I didn't....I kept having spasms...felt like I had to go the bathroom constantly. My PCP thinks I developed some scare tissue from the cath....he has been treating me for 9 months with Detrol LA...4 mg once a day....just last month we dropped it down to 2 mgs....and I will try to go without in a month or two. Good Luck

I had bladder spasms after I had my daughter. OMG!!! I had three. I called 911 three times. If it is a bladder spasm...you know something is difinately wrong. They actually feel like intense labor contractions. I have only had one UTI in my life time so I can not really understand your pain. But I would definately contact your doctor.

Maybe you contracted urethritis, inflammation of the urethra, the point where the urine exits the body. I got that after a UTI, and let me tell ya, I was scraping the walls every time I peed. I had to have Vicodin for the pain! As someone who puts catheters in, takes them out, and deals with any UTI's afterwards, let me tell you it's very common after having this foreign thing in your body that your body acts like this. Your doc should be able to help you with some urinary analgesics, something like pyridium or uriset. Just ask! Thanks, Kim, LPN IV

I had UTI that seemed better with antibiotics but not completely and lasted months. Finally my OB/GYN (I was pregnant)consulted a urologist who had me cultured. I had some rare bug that required 5 shots of Rocefin. Maybe you should see a urologist if you haven't already.
