Question:
What's the reason for elevated liver enzymes?
I am trying to anatomically/physiologically figure out what it is about RNY that causes an elevation in our liver enzymes. My SGOT was elevated at a year out and the surgeon didn't seem too concerned. I've seen others with elevations. Can anyone explain why we would have liver problems post op? Thanx! Shelley — Shelley. I am still Pre Op, but I have heard of liver problems post op, so at the
last lecture given by Dr. Tanaka, I posed the question about the liver
issues. He said before (older surgeries) would sometimes result in liver
problems, but that if you FAITHFULLY take all of your vitamins, that it
should not turn into a problem. Are you making certain to get all of your
required vitamins in EVERY single day? This liver stuff kinda worried me,
and that is why I asked him. I hope this helps in some way.... Like I
said, I am preop and just gathering the info to make a good decision about
WLS... I am really hoping for my approval by the end of this month
though... If you find out any other info, I would love to hear about it
too. God Bless.

You know, I've been thinking about this since you posted it. I guess I've
just accepted it as commonplace among us. They can normalize a bit with
time. We've been taking milk thistle for about 18 months and that's
brought them down to within a peg of normal. But WHY, I have no idea.
Seems to hit everyone, regardless of protein intake or water. If I get a
chance, I'll ask. I'm wondering if it might have to do with malabsorption
of the fats/oils. That's a random speculation there.
