Question:
starting bmi of 40.2, if i lose 10% pre-op, will i still qualify?
My bmi is 40.2. My surgeon asks for a 10% weight loss prior to surgery which will obviously lower my bmi below 40. i have hypertension and hypothyroidism. will that be enough to keep me qualified? — Jennifer D. (posted on May 23, 2002)

My dr. has the same requirement and I was told that they use your starting
weight for the obtaining approval.

I know my insurance said they would qualitfy me with a 38, but some really
require the 40. Perhaps your surgeon could get your approval before you
lose the wieght? Perhaps your surgeon would be flexible because of the
insurance requirement? Perhaps there is another surgeon who is moe willing
to work with you as an individual and not just apply an inflexible rule to
you. You should really talk to him/her. I was in you exact situation 2
years ago and now am a happy healthy size 8. Good luck and just keep
trying. You'll be so happy you did.

they use the starting weight for approval...but I think it's lame when they
require a % of weight-loss pre-op. Yeesh!
